Medan is an interesting city with a mix of different cultures - Batak, Javanse Achenese, Chinese. There are some excellent restaurants - in the old China Town. I recommend Cambridge Mall for Restaurants and Cinemas. I also recommend visiting Berastagi , 3 hours by car. A charming Hill station where they grow beautiful flowers and fruits.Guest review byPeter W JacksonUnited Kingdom - 6.0

One should never expect too much of cities in Sumatra and Palembang is no exception. The only area of any interest is the old commercial area near the river and the fort. The grand mosque is worth a cursory look, but the only building of any distinction is the greatly restored museum, which dates from Dutch times. Apart from that, Palembang is pretty unattractive, litter choked and to a large extent semi derelict.Guest review byJohnson - 8.0

Basically Padang is for people who probably finds food hunting their choice of travel. For me, going to Padang was a gateway to Kerinci, for the mountain hike. Padang in itself did not have much sightseeing places to offer but perhaps we did not take the island tours or any waterfall visits. Overall, it's a nice small place to chill and relax.Guest review byBenHo84Malaysia - 10.0

We just left and are already thinking about when we'll return. We've experienced a wonderful place: its people, its jungle, its culture. We've always been greeted with smiles, joy, and support from the entire town. The food is always great! And what can we say about the surroundings? We're nature lovers, so there couldn't be a better place. We'll definitely be back! We stayed in Eriono, an unbeatable location. We also stayed at the Garden Inn. But there are many good places and plenty of places to eat or drink. Getting around Bukit is very easy; you can walk everywhere, but if not, you can take a motorbike, tuk-tuk, or car; anything is possible. What we really liked was the four-day trek through the jungle, and being able to observe orangutans was magical.Guest review byVanesaTorricoSpain - 10.0

When travelling I prefer to enjoy the place & mix with the people instead of hopping from one place to another spending hours in a car. Eating where they eat & shopping where they shop instead of “touristic” destinations. I walked around from the house to Ngarai Sianok then Jam Gadang. The weather cooperated throughout my stay, but the crowds were packed due to the town 29th anniversary celebrations. Maybe visiting during mid year instead of monsoon & peak holiday seasons will give more time to enjoy the areas. The costs are friendly to the wallet & even small food stalls around the areas are delicious & representing the traditional dishes.Guest review byZaihanor Liza - 10.0

Tuk Tuk is mainly where beginner tourists stay, just like me. Tuk Tuk has many restaurants, cafes, hotels, resorts, homestays and guesthouses. Those are located along the main road at Tuk Tuk as well. If you do not want to spend on cafes and restaurants, no worries, there are convenient stores and shops along the main road. Very simple. But I would suggest people go to the restaurant and eat their local cuisines and seafood for the better. The only downside is the main road of Tuk Tuk is very troublesome and tough to walk and cycle as it is very steep going up and down. It is not a road that is stable. I would recommend people take a motorbike, scooter or car to travel along the main road.Guest review byRachelSingapore - 8.0

The volcano hike was amazing and so beautiful, but there wasn’t much else to do after that. If in a straight couple or a mixed gender group it might be more pleasant to wander around and explore the the town, but as a solo woman or two women it was quite uncomfortable in terms of the amount of attention and harassment we received. If I went again I would just arrive in the afternoon, do the hike in the AM, and then head off again after that.Guest review bySaraUnited Kingdom - 10.0

There was virtually no tourism here; every person I saw was a local, which made the visit authentic and relaxing. If you want to stretch out and sip tropical drinks, this is not your place; if you want to truly experience life as an Indonesian might, it is perfect. Food was startlingly inexpensive, especially the street food. Even Western food was about 1/4 the price I might expect in other ASEAN countries.Guest review byKeithAustralia - 4.0
A typical Sumatran city.
A typical Sumatran city. Overcrowded, dirty, largely derelict, and poorly maintained. Not a place to stay in for long, it seems to me. Wisely, l was just passing through so I have no idea of the local "attractions", but I doubt whether there are any. Getting around is best achieved on the back of a Gojek bike.Guest review byJohnson - 10.0
Lovely relaxing easy Island to travel on.
Lovely relaxing easy Island to travel on. We had scooters which were perfect, but many tuk tuks or taxis. Stunning Island, almost entirely covered in natural vegetation. Very low population, caters well for tourists. No flash restaurants that we came across but plenty of options around the Island. Much more relaxed than the mainland with Sharia law, just be respectful and dress appropriately. Bikinis etc on private beaches seem to be fine, but cover up to go on boats, into public areas etc. Once again lovely local people, a pleasure to visit.Guest review byMary AnneNew Zealand
