From the very start of walking around, it was so stunning and welcoming - filled with tourists but somehow still feeling peaceful and calming. Having been to Samarkand first, I found Bukhara less impressive than perhaps other people might. One of the issues I have is that it feels totally commercial which detracts from the cultural and historical significance of the city. All of the main sites were filled with carpet and craft sellers- which was the case in in Samarkand, but there, they did not overshadow the cultural and historical significance of the sites. My stay in Bukhara coincided with the muslim holiday Eid Al-Adha and Bukhara Silk & Spice festival. Apart from the usual beautiful sightsee sites there was music and dance everywhere in the streets. Huge outdoor spice market and a big market where people sold mainly handmade suzani and other decorations. Bukhara has the charm of an old city with lots of history. You can walk around everywhere. I was very lucky to be there during the Silk and Spice Festival. The traffic was closed in the old city which made the walk around very pleasant. There were people everywhere, singing and dancing!
