    The locals are awesome!

The locals are awesome! County show and the place is rammed, the pubs are flat out, drinks are pouring, food keeps coming; but so do the people and our place is about to be overwhelmed. In comes a paramedic from her shift. Off with the jacket, on with an apron and now she's bringing food. Did anyone act tired or troubled? No. Just big smiles and and a 'hey good to see ya' welcome. So that's got to be a one off right? Not here. We're heading for the accommodation and along comes a piper with a small gang and the second best dog in the show who's wearing a rosette to prove it. She's been piping all day and that's hard work. We make a fuss of the dog (no such thing as a second best dog and this one was adorable). "Come on fellas, let me show you the best pub in town." So we're down on the quay in a tiny room and it was jumping. Those pipes were LOUD. And after she stops playing, she's behind the bar. To give the barman a break. Fair play to you Portree, we were impressed!

There seems to be a lot of closed up cafes /business premises in Kyleakin. Its a sprawling sort of place, maybe we hit it at a bad time. I would not have been too keen to stay there but for our cottage which was fabulous and if we had been staying longer it would have been a lovely house to base oneself in for trips to the rest of the island.

Passing through, needed a base. It’s a bit out of the way, no buses in evening to connect to rest of Skye for returning from activities. The coop nearby makes for good grocery shopping, and the shoreline trail is scenic, for a short walk. Bus stop is a 5 min walk.

It was a beautiful island, but without activities, you might as well make a day trip and spend the money on better accommodation in the area, where you also have the option to choose from more restaurants.

Dunvegan was quite central to travelling across Skye for our various planned activities - whisky tour, puffin tour, walking Quiraing, Fairy Pools and Old Man of Storr. The two shops had enough for the grocery essentials and there were several cafes and restaurants to provide choice. The castle was interesting though a bit pricey.

A trip here needs time to enjoy the environment around and at the hotel. It is not very near a large town but a village is not far away. But that also makes it special. Make sure to get there during daylight as the roads leading to the hotel are not highways. The food was delicious and well proportioned. We wanted to stay there for longer.

Peaceful area, definitely need own transport. Ferry just a 10 minute walk / 2 min drive which is excellent for early ferry times. Scenery is amazing and less busy than other areas. About a 15 minute drive to Broadford with a good range of facilities.

Sconser is quite small but it is central to most of Skye and the Raasay ferry is on your doorstep (lovely walking at the north of the island and up Dun Can, lots of eagles, Brochel Castle, a distillery). The village is set back on a road parallel to the main road and houses look forward to the sea and Raasay and backwards to the mountain Glamaig (great views both ways). The Sconser Lodge Hotel has a cosy bar with open fireplace. Their restaurant is open to non-residents when they can cope with numbers so nip in and chat about available dates well in advance.

Just everything I think that the time of year we were there (April) made a big difference, less traffic and tourists. The roads area a little narrow and tight driving at times but still passable with care. The beach at Staffin was just great, we spent time just relaxing sitting chilling watching the waves crashing over the rocks. Bliss All the area around Staffin was just amazing, beautiful and serene.

Well located for visiting Skye, but not the most beautiful of Scottish towns. Be aware that most of the restaurants do not accept bookings, so finding a good evening meal can be challenging. We found that if you go no later than 6pm you can get into most of them ok and generally the standard of meals are good.
