Lucerne offers paddle steamer trips on the lake, mountain railways, a huge transport museum, art gallery, Richard Wagner's lakeside villa, the world's largest painting 300 ft wide, a panorama dating from the 1870's and featuring dramatic panoramic scenes from the Franco-Prussian War, beautiful churches, superb dining and much more, not least stunning lake and mountain scenery. From Lucerne it is easy to visit other parts of Switzerland by train on day trips. Lucerne is a beautiful place. We went up to Mt Pilatus which would have been lovely except for the masses of tourists. The tour guide Yolanda was absolutely lovely and looking after us but we were packed into the gondola like sheep with people pushing. Lucerne is high on the list with all the booking agents with the result it is overrun with tourists. Would not travel to Switzerland again.Guest review byUrsulaAustralia - 6.0

Lucerne is famous for it's lake, and for the old town part. We took the 1 hour boat ride and so got an impression of the lake, and did the walk around the old town. We were touring around Switzerland, and to be honest, the old town in Bern was much, much better than Lucerne, and there are many other Swiss lakes that are more beautiful, quieter, and less touristy. As you can guess, our feeling of Lucerne was that it was okay, but if you are short of time I would visit Bern, Wengen or Geneva.Guest review byPhilUnited States

However our room was looking out onto a busy street, and with a music festival on during our stay the thumping music went on til early hours. The room was tight with two single beds, no air conditioning so it was sweltering. At €220 per night it was utterly criminal to charge this much. It was a glorified student campus accommodation.
