I've been to Girona three times and always enjoy the Spanish atmosphere there. The old historic part of the town is great to visit with a lot of interesting things to see and it has nice cafes. I enjoyed visiting the indoor market which has a great selection of stalls. There are also lovely shops, restaurants and bars. From the train station you can visit Barcelona, the Dali Museum at Figueres and I have also taken a local bus from Figueres to Escala on the coast which has nice beaches. Girona is really stunning as well as historic, cultural, clean and friendly. It is a really pleasurable, healthful city, oxygenated by the Onyar river and beloved by cyclists and runners who were doing a weekend orienteering festival while we were there. Crossing over one bridge or another to and fro to the ancient city parts then back to the commercial areas was really energising. The walks along the ramparts, into the German gardens and a visit to the imposing and spacious cathedral is quite elemental for a morning visit. Trailing the medieval streets and arch lined avenues there are independent boutiques, quaint bars, coffee shops as well as ultra gourmand dining spaces. We found vegan options and wonderful service at a number of places where waiting staff were benevolent, charming and passionate about the food and service. Be prepared for some serious uphill treks Probably the best city for atmosphere and views the walled walk were amazing you really feel you have gone back in time. I would recommend Girona to anyone who can manage a lot of steps. A walled city with iconic Game of Throne venues.
