While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter...
While Nagano is best known outside Japan as a Winter Olympics host city and a favourite place for people to ski in Winter, it is also the site of the Zenkō-ji Temple.
As one of the most important Buddhist sites in Japan it is extensive and beautifully landscaped. Despite the large number of visitors we felt calmed each of the times we walked through the grounds. You can also purchase a ticket (¥1,200) to climb the Niōmon Gate, visit the main Hondo and walk through the dark tunnel, turn the giant storehouse that contains a complete set of sutras, and see the museum in the war memorial pagoda at the rear of the complex.
Nagano itself is a nice prefectural capital surrounded by forested mountains. In the good late autumn weather it was beautiful and we enjoyed wandering the small streets finding little restaurants and stores, and looking at the interesting mix of old and very new architecture.
We didn't visit any of the popular museums and galleries as after almost 4 weeks in Japan we were "museumed out", but did stumble across the Nishinomon-Yoshinoya Sake Brewery which is well worth a visit, and had lunch at Unaginoyado Sumiyoshi - a well-regarded unagi restaurant.
There are also lots of scenic and nature locations to visit in the surrounding hills, but you need more time than we had to enjoy them.
Overall, Nagano was a bit of a surprise package and being just 1½ hours from Tokyo by Shinkansen I would recommend a visit as part of any Japan itinerary.

Handly location to use as a base for surrounding areas like Matsumoto and Obuse. Just be aware the train to Obuse is not on the JR or the IC/Suica/Pasmo and you'd need cash to buy the ticket.

Many different activities available in the area - cultural, historical, and natural. The Togakushi Shrine Pilgrimage and Kamikochi National Park were my favorites. Excellent souvenir shopping on the street in front of Zenkoji Temple. The city is very walkable. The train from Tokyo provides easy access. During hot summer months it is cooler in Nagano.
The Inn has a long and interesting history and is a traditional Japanese Inn where the proprietor treats you like an honored guest and personal friend. The food served is sourced locally, tastes wonderful, and is presented beautifully. The proprietor, Maki, patiently explains everything about the food, staying at a Ryokan, the in-house Onsen, and what to do in the area. The rooms are adorned with art and historical artifacts and the location of the Inn is perfect. The stay here was the highlight of our trip to Japan.
the location was the key attraction. the hotel is linked to Midori where food and transport is easily accessible. It was very important as it meant that my 80+ year old mother is able to walk to the train station warm as we were in Nagano during winter. Food at Midori was great as always, there are really nice eating places close by as well. Next is the ease of transportation - most of the buses are routed here, so getting around Nagano is very easy. The room is a really good size and everything was clean
No frills hotel with the essentials. Comfortably got the job done for us, just not a relaxing vacation sort of place. Accessible location from the train station and though it's about 30min walking to Zenkoji, it's a scenic walk with lots of stalls and shops after the 15min point. Staff was very kind and accommodating, letting us check-in early because it was pouring outside and giving us towels to dry off. They also stored our luggage for a few hours after check out.
We had a fantastic time at 1166 Backpacker.
- Location: It is perfectly located to explore the city (the famous Zenkoji Temple is a 5-minute walk away) and is also a 20-minute walk from the train station.
- This is a traditional Japanese house with futon beds, super comfy, we had our best sleep in Japan there.
- The team was super kind and friendly, and we enjoyed chatting with them.
Merci Etsuko, c'était un plaisir de parler avec toi :)
Location was amazing - for a short stay its right by the train station with a convenience store nearby. Easy to access the train as well as go around the city.
The room was simple, and large enough for out luggage and to comfortable lounge around.
Check-in was fast and efficient, and the hotel offers complimentary hair, skin care, etc. at the lobby that you can bring up and use in your room.
- excellent location, near the station and in the heart of the city
- fabulous breakfast, huge choice and local products; attention though, you must be accustomed to the traditional Japanese breakfast, not so many western options
- the room was great, pretty big for Japanese standards; the hotel starts to show its age but it's well maintained
- friendly staff, very helpful
This is the best imaginable place to stay in Nagano. Perfectly located between the train station and the famous Zenkoji. Japanese style rooms in a authentic hotel, with a common hot bath. Travelling as a family with a 1-year-old, we were very happy that the charming owners gave us one of the baths for family use. Next time we will eat dinner there, too!
Location was great - about 3 min walk to Nagano station. It's about 30 min walk to the major temple and the walk there is lovely. Room was clean and the toiletries were good. We had a room with a window seat which was great to look out into the city at night time. The hotel is located above a convenience store which was great.
A short walk from the main Nagano train station across an overpass bridge. The staff were lovely and rooms were easily the largest we had for the same cost on our Japan trip.
The rooms were a bit older, but well maintained and extremely clean, with comfortable beds.
Would recommend for anyone staying in the Nagano city area.
The room was good, slightly bigger than the average Japanese hotel room (in our budget). Comfortable bed, lots of amenities (also for children with slippers and duck-shaped sponges).
TV, yukata, kettle,….
Good location with the bus and train station across the road.
And very friendly, helpful staff.
The staff were extremely kind and helpful. They helped store my luggage before my check in window and when I checked in and when to my room, the luggage was already there! It's very close to the station and easy to find. The room is a little bigger than the average hotel rooms in Japan.
Near the Nagano train station. There're a lot of restaurants around. The room's was Japanese standard which had enough space but not spacious. They had pillow of choice and amentities at the first floor for guests.Western style breakfast was delicious.
Hotel staffs are polite and helpful although they do not speak English well. The hotel is close to Nagano station. It is about 15 mins nice walk to Zenkoji Shrine. It is not far from Hokuto Culture hall.
The location is great. Very near to Nagano train station. The hotel is well maintained, the room are quiet and clean. Staffs are friendly and helpful. The breakfast is Japanese style, wholesome.
Nice hotel with a spacious room (by Japanese standards). Short walk from station. Helpful staff. Easy walk to restaurants around the station. Would stay there again.
The hotel served our purposes very well. It was centrally located to the train station and very quiet and comfortable for getting a good night's sleep.
