At the meeting point of Switzerland, Germany and France, Basel is an eclectic mix of historic and modern, tranquil and vibrant, with Swiss cleanliness and efficiency thrown in for good measure.
Augusta Raurica, on the outskirts, has a well-preserved Roman theater, while the Old Town is a museum of medieval buildings. The Renaissance Town Hall looks down on Marktplatz’s daily market, while the red sandstone and colorful tiles of the Münster were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bringing it right up to date are the modern creations of city residents Herzog & De Meuron, designers of London’s Tate Modern.
When you’ve finished exploring this architectural heritage, there are still plenty of things to do in Basel. The city’s fine art museum is the world’s oldest art collection, and the zoo is the oldest and largest in Switzerland. Remember to bring plenty of Swiss francs for the shopping mile along Clarastrasse and Freiestrasse.
The Basel accommodations on Booking.com range from hotels in Grossbasel to B&Bs in Kleinbasel, home to the nightlife. If you’re flying into Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport in February or March, you might just catch Fasnacht, Switzerland’s biggest carnival. You’ll have to get up early to catch the 4 am start, though!
Lovely walkable historical city
Lots of museums and City give free Basil card if you stay there which offers free public transport and discounts helps redress the cost of meals
Markethall was great place to eat lots of choice of food stalls and at reasonable prices and open long hours

Basel was much nicer than I had anticipated!
Basel was much nicer than I had anticipated! I usually go to Luzern and Zurich while traveling by train; making them brief stops of two or three days. This time I stopped in Basel and I was delighted with this wonderful city! I can’t wait to return and plan on staying a few more days to take it all in! Wonderful for shopping and dining and easy to get to on the train. Also convenient for visiting surrounding areas, making an ideal home base for longer visits in Switzerland.

We absolutely loved the zoo!
We absolutely loved the zoo! Quite small but the layout was deceptive so that it seemed much larger. The animals appeared well cared for and the enclosures were spacious with attention to enriching the environment for them, while at the same time allowing the visitors to get very close to them. In a very expensive country the entrance fee was very reasonable and half price with the Basel card.
The university botanical garden was also a little gem with a collection of unusual plants beautifully displayed and free to visit.
Basel itself an attractive city with a good feel about it. Don’t miss the quirky fountains near the theatre in the centre of town. Everything is very expensive for a British visitor which applies to Switzerland in general.

Perfect for a city break and good connection even to travel...
Perfect for a city break and good connection even to travel to other cities nationally and internationally as Basel is sandwhiched between France and Germany so, up to you where your heart will lead you for a day trip towards those countries.
Peaceful and efficient. Trasport good, people chilled.
Be ready to bring some money if you need to stay longer.

Basel is magical, I really enjoyed visiting it.
Basel is magical, I really enjoyed visiting it. The old town is so so nice. It's also very well connected to other places like Reigoldswil for the waterfall or to Augusta Raurica which I recommend.

Lovely city, but very expensive!
Lovely city, but very expensive! Mind you that most kitchens close at 21h and don't accept customers well in advance, as well as lots of places are closed on Sundays and Mondays. Go for all the beauty of the city, but bring the big wallet and plan to eat out early if you don't rent a place with a kichen and cook yourself. Don't bother to stay on a Monday, and consider to leave early on a Sunday, those two days are very, very quiet in Basel!
Very close to the 14 tram, which was helpful for getting to the old town, train station and zoo. The shower was really nice, even if the bathroom gets wet when you use it. We were on the 11th floor and the big windows with the view of the city made the room feel bigger. With a baby cot in the room it was very difficult to get around, the rooms are quite small, but adequate. Overall, a decent place which would be overpriced if it hadn’t been in Switzerland.
The other hotel I stayed in Switzerland didn't provide shampoo and soap, but Vision Apartments provides high quality ones with big volume. The location is excellent as well - 10 minutes walks from the central station, and can easily take tram trains to museums or even by walk. The pool area on the roof top is a must visit. The yard on the ground in the hotel is also very cozy. We bought food from Micro and enjoyed our diner in the yard.
One of the best hostels i ever stayed . Best in Switzerland
Staff are very nice , special thanks to lovely ESRA (anladınız TR)
They send you email of free tram ticket but you dont need it . Because i walked everywhere
Location = get out of train station from media matket side. Go 300 meters directly on a lovely street . Everything you going to visit are on other side of station
Sink in every room
I advice you to stay here,
Considering the type of accomodation, everything works perfectly.
The place has all you need, including a communal kitchen and coworking facilities.
A nice option to stay overnight and close to the train station (hauptbanhof).
Nice shower and excellent toilette products.
Remember that Switzerland is an overrated country and the capsule hotel is an option to save some swiss francs.
For breakfast there was a huge amount of food to choose from.
My room was above the tram , but I heard nothing. There is air conditioning.
I never watched TV, but watched the people outside.
Train station 5 minutes away. Old town was a 15 minute walk. COOP was around the corner for food and everything else. Two restaurants next to hotel. Starbucks is across the street.
Being first time in Switzerland, i was a bit scared on how to find the facility from the airport but was surprised to locate the facility was very easy, was welcomed warmly as the staff were already aware of my arrival, the rooms, beds, lavatories are clean and comfortable, would definitely recommended anyone visiting Basel to spend a night at BASEL BACKPACK HOSTELS
As good as I expected to an youth hotels in Switzerland. Very good location(very easy to find), kind staff...I just happened to share the room with a bit crazy girl and it wasn't their fault that she wasn't well and drunk, but they changed my room on my request at the end...except that incident, everything was good and I had a great stay in Basel youth hostel.
We had a nice, roomy apartment with a bathroom, two bedrooms and a balcony for half the price of two double rooms in Bern Ibis budget hotel, which was a nice surprise. The location is excellent, in a silent street, a 5 min walk from the train station. I liked the relaxed atmosphere of the lounge. The host at the unified bar/reception was kind and helpful.
The staff was extremely nice, very friendly and warm. I could get a room in the morning as it was already prepared although check-in starts in the afternoon. The bed was VERY comfortable. Everything feels and look very new, not my favorite interior design style but you can see they are making an effort ;-) qood quality price ratio, at least for Switzerland
It is a good hotel clean comfortable and easy to reach the tram stop train station and the centre of Basel. I recommend it because you can travel all Switzerland and the hotel gave us a ticket for all the days we been there for Basel. The Swiss pass is a good choice to travel all Switzerland. Thanks for having us there!
The staff was nice and helpful. The lobby area was a lovely place to sit and relax while having a drink from the bar and listening to piano music. The room was nice and comfortable. The trams stopped right in front of the hotel, which made it convenient to get to the Market and Old Town, which we really enjoyed.
Enjoyed our stay at Hotel D which was a small boutique hotel with lovely rooms and staff that was ready to greet and answer questions. A delicious breakfast offered each morning for an additional fee was well worth it. Great location made it easy to access public transportation and walk to old Town areas.
It was the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in Europe. They gave free basel card for free transportation. They offered limitless water which is very important. There was a coffee machine in the room and that was nice. They location was perfect.
This hotel was ideally located in the old center of Basil. Everything is accessible walking or by public transport. The rooms and facilities were clean, modern and comfortable. I will definitely stay here again when in Basel!
The location was perfect for my need. The room was very clean. Complimentary coffee and water were very appreciated. The free hotel car park is a rarity in the Basel area
