I’ve visited San Jose Costa Rica many times since the 1970s. It’s gotten completely jammed with traffic, but it is a beautiful city with lots to see and admire. My favorite is the old concert hall, which I’m blanking on the name, but it is the only concert hall I believe in the city. Being a city it’s always important to watch your pockets, and this is become a problem, the last couple decades. If you like a big city, San Jose is great. We live in southern Costa Rica and only go to San Jose for doctor visits and shopping. It's best to take a taxi or Uber in San Jose. The traffic is crazy. I did a tour for the first two weeks of the volcano area, rain forest, Caribbean, and then the Pacific side of the island. During the tour, we also ziplined, rode horseback, white water rafting, soaked in hot springs, and hiked the rain forest and volcano areas. When the tour ended I stayed for another 10 days in downtown San Jose and did day trips out of the apartment. People are family-oriented, friendly, and supportive. You can drink the water and use US electric devices. Go, you will love it.

I did leave early in the morning so did not experience Breakfast. Shakti was a very nice hostel. Very clean and super cute. It had very good access to the downtown merchants and food places. Later at night the merchants and restaurants around the hostel did close so you should know to get dinner before you come back to the hostel it is later.
