Oban is a city built around a late 18th-century distillery that produces one of the finest single malt whiskeys in Scotland. This normally peaceful town is invaded during summer when tourists use it as a base to visit the Inner Hebrides islands such as Mull, Lismore and Coll, supporting its status as the Gateway to the Isles.
The horseshoe-shaped Oban Bay is sheltered by Kerrera Island with its spectacular Gylen Castle. Award-winning seafood restaurants and lively pubs line George Street and the waterfront of Corran Esplanade adjacent to the harbour.
Take a short walk up the hill to McCaig’s Tower, a structure based on the Roman Colosseum, for the finest views of Oban’s centre and the outer islands. When you get back down to sea level, stroll into and stumble out of the Oban whiskey distillery after sampling the local version of the 'water of life'.
Admire the coastal scenery as you travel a bit out of town to the 7th-century ruins of Dunollie Castle, home of the Clan MacDougall. The Firth of Lorn gives visitors a fanatstic opportunity to try some sea kayaking.
As the capital of North Argyll, Oban has a great selection of hotels, guest houses and B&Bs available on Booking.com.

Oban is a delightful seaside town that offers very good restaurants, shopping (small shops with nice merchandise) and the ability to enjoy the beauty of the bay and all of its activity. Oban makes a great base for exploring the area of walks/hikes, going out on small boat short duration trips to see wildlife, lots of castles to visit or to take the ferry out to the islands. Taxi service is plentiful as are private tour guides.

Bustling little port at centre of Highland area, ferries to outer and inner islands. Train station if no car, plus reasonable bus service to places of interest, eg. Dunstaffnage Castle and Oceanic research facility at Dunbeg etc. Try a ferry visit to Mull and look out for seals , dolphins, etc.
Excellent shops and restaurants, all in small scale and within easy walking distance.
Lots of points of interest and if weather nice, very hard to beat. Great for Families with young children and Oldies as well.

GORGEOUS little port town.
GORGEOUS little port town. Lots of lovely little shops, an interesting war time museum, and excellent food and drink in the numerous cafes, bars, and restaurants. Easy access to travel by bus, ferries, and trains.
Walked (some of us VERY SLOWLY!) up the hill to McCaig's Tower and enjoyed the spectacular views; followed by a delicious late lunch at Cuan Mor.

Absolutely perfect location .
Absolutely perfect location . The rooms are gorgeous with everything you need from tea coffee milk to hairdryer and iron if you need to use one I would give the hotel top marks the staff were all friendly . Unfortunately I we didn't eat in the hotel but we definitely will next time
good things were hotel location, on site parking, 24 hour reception, room size/layout, en suite had lovely hot shower (over bath), large bar lounge, friendly staff, the breakfast self service buffet on the first floor had a very good varied choice of hot and cold fair and was excellently prepared. Although the hotel including the room were a little bit tired they had character and the package come in at a fair price. I would definitely return to The Royal Hotel if staying in Oban
If you want: a clean, albeit small hotel room (we are never in the room much anyways so does it matter?!), VERY central location walkable to the city center of Oban, friendly staff (we never had breakfast there, though), easy check-in and out, parking available nearby although not on property... this is a great option in Oban! We had a room with a private but unattached bathroom which worked fine for my husband and I but would probably not work for children.
Property may not be most attractive from outside above retail shop but once inside from entrance lobby, stairwell and apartment all very good. The apartment was spotlessly clean and had all the features described on the website site. Keys are collected from hotel reception a few doors down. Centrally located within walking distance of all shops and restaurants in Oban. Some metered parking on street and nearby.
Perfect location with an unobstructed view of the ocean. The room was beautiful and very well appointed with wonderful touches like a refrigerator with cold water and snacks provided daily. Daily sherry was provided too. The hotel was clean and quiet and we couldn’t have asked for a moreperfect stay.
One of our favorite stays on our 2 week trip. only sad that it was for one night. the rooms were lovely. The staff was beyond helpful and friendly. IF we ever make it back to Scotland we will definitely stay here. Rate this hotel a total 10/10 and would recommend to everyone for sure!!
Hotel was fresh and clean. Staff were friendly and welcoming. We did have a bit of a hiccup during our stay, which was rectified afterwards. Rooms have everything you need for a comfortable stay.
Location was ideal for exploring oban and in walking distance of all the local shops and pubs.
The location is obviously the highlight of the hotel. They could make so much more money if they invested in upgrading and maintaining the building better. It's really an old historic jewel of Oban, so they should treat it like one and take care of it.
Very cheap hotel in Oban, although offering a room worth even less that what paid for. Good option for a quick stop in Oban. Friendly staff welcoming us at the arrival! Good breakfast provided, and included in the room cost.
We stayed in the Oban Bay Hotel after a trip around the NC 500. We found the hotel and staff to be superb. The entire stay was wonderful. I would highly recommend the hotel.
This hotel is right in the middle of anything you’d like to do in Oban! The staff are super friendly and the cleaning staff are super nice. The rooms were clean and comfy.
Good position of hotel central for all attractions in Oban. Beds small but comfortable.
Cafe Rio attached to hotel - food excellent & lovely atmosphere.
