The Foxes Den, hotel in Assington

From before we arrived, I knew our stay was going to be wonderful. Vanessa messaged to confirm our arrival time and checked it on the day of arrival to ensure nothing had changed. We were travelling with my disabled father in law and Vanessa made the whole stay such an easy and stressless one. Nothing was too much trouble and she went above and beyond to ensure his comfort and his needs were met. Breakfasts were great and served in the conservatory. Steve and Vanessa are marvellous hosts and if we are ever over again they would be our first choice of where to stop, I cannot recommend them enough. Thank you Steve and Vanessa xx

The Crown Inn, hotel in Assington

Boasting wonderful views across the Stour and Box river valleys, this privately owned inn is set on a hill in the picturesque village of Stoke-by-Nayland, on the Essex and Suffolk border.

Breakfast had a great choice from the menu and from the continental selection with fresh fruit and clearly labelled cereals. The dinner choices were outstanding. Everything I ate was fresh and well balanced. The fish choices and desserts were a particular favourite. The room was well decorated with a calming colour scheme and details considered such as the perfect curtain length. The outside space included various places to sit in the shade or sun, on the patio surrounded by plants or on the lawn with a view of the countryside. The plants brought nature to the rooms and meant I could watch birds and insects from my window. The rooms are away from the pub so piece can be found even on a busy night. Yet as it is such a short walk it won’t be a struggle for those who need step free access or little exertion.

The Angel Inn, Stoke-by-Nayland, hotel in Assington

Set in beautiful Suffolk countryside, this grade II 16th-century coaching Inn’s offers rooms with antique furniture and free Wi-Fi. The traditional restaurant and bar provide great food and real ales....

This was an excellent overnight stay in very comfortable and spotlessly maintained surroundings. It wasn't cheap, but the quality of the service and the restaurant justified the expense. The ancient village inn had been completely refurbished in a charming and elegant style. The restaurant menu was a gastronomic treat - inventive and creative cooking in a stylish and intimate environment.

We like The Barn to eat at and the farm shop. You need to arrive at The Barn before 3 pm as they do not serve hot food after this. A walk by the river is lovely, although this time the river was in the fields.

Wonderful, clean modern room with a lovely bath plus the best full English breakfast ever! Farm fresh eggs, locally made sausages, delicious tomatoes, tasty back bacon, buffet available too. Highly recommended - great value for money and a friendly owner who made us feel most welcome! This location also has cakes and coffees available in the afternoons and does Sunday lunches, which look divine, but we weren't able to try on this occasion, as we only stayed one night on our way to a wedding.

Romantic, secluded, beautiful, spacious, cosy place for couples with a hottub. Amazing little place and will definitely be going back. There's a cafe on site although we didn't try this but they did bring us breakfast in bed which we asked if we could have bacon sandwiches instead of the continental which was no problem. Assington is a lovely village with easy access to Sudbury, Colchester and Ipswich.

This location is not only handy for me to visit relatives its also conveniently located for visiting the Stour Valley and Dedham Vale villages and towns. Both Sudbury and Colchester are within easy reach. Whilst in the area I visited Woodbridge, Dedham and Long Melford all of which are close enough for day trips and provide cultural, sightseeing and shopping opportunities
