A goldmine of Greek and Roman heritage, Siracusa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Necropolis of Pantalica in hills to the north-west.
Siracusa itself has a necropolis within the amazing Neapolis archaeological park, which also houses Roman amphitheatre and altar remains, as well as one of the largest Greek theatres ever built. Legend has it that the site includes the tomb of Archimedes, who was born here.
The ancient Greeks founded the city (also known as Syracuse) and Cicero even considered it the greatest of all. Columns from that period were used to build the Baroque cathedral, and the Fountain of Arethusa dates to the same era. Both are within Ortygia, a walled peninsula jutting into the turquoise Mediterranean Sea. Also here are ruins of the Roman temple of Apollo, and at the tip of the peninsula is the 13th-century Maniace Castle.
The fabulous Siracusa Archaeological Museum houses relics from all these periods, and is located by the Catacombs of Saint John. Opposite them both is the modern conical spire of the Madonna delle Lacrime Sanctuary church.
Aside from all this history, Siracusa also has plenty of pavement cafes and restaurants, and lovely sandy beaches overlooked by luxury hotels, cheap B&Bs and holiday homes available on Booking.com.

The streets are charming especially on Ortigia but the sights and museums fall short of other cities, including Palermo and Taormina on Sicily and far short of Florence or Sienna on the mainland. Still, having visited all those other places Syracuse was a pleasant place to spend a couple of days. The main archeological site (overly hyped and ruined by a theatre development) and associated museum are far from Ortigia, which means a long hike or waiting for the tiny red minibus 105 if you can find the stop just over the bridge from Ortigia. Seeing the one Caravaggio in Santa Lucia was another hike across the mainland. On Ortigia, the castle was only OK; the Mikveh looked interesting from outside but we hadn't booked the guided tour. The market was excellent (buy some almond biscuits for 12 euros a kilo!) and close to the impressive Temple of Apollo. We ate well (lots of seafood) but missed out on a really good looking restaurant for lack of a reservation. The coach ride from Catania airport was cheap and functional but the taxi touts at the terminal were sharks, I'm afraid.

Very nice town. We had fun walking around.
Very nice town. We had fun walking around. Beautiful to walk around at night time. Felt safe there. La Fustella was a great leather goods store and everything was made on site. Prices were very good. We also found some paintings on parchment paper at Galleria Bellomo. There is great street food and beautiful sea views.

Lots to see and explore both in the main town eg museums, churches & the archeological park then on Ortigia where history abounds. Plenty of little restaurants to be found up narrow alleyways on Ortigia which are well-lit and have a good atmosphere. Lots of walking required but mostly level with only a few slopes down - & of course back up! - towards the shore but lots of little shops, some touristy but others more interesting like ceramics to distract you. Great views from the shoreline or promenade that runs round the headland so lovey sunsets to view. Felt very safe & people helpful if you need directions. Food-wise - if you like fish, you'll be in heaven plus the usual Italian pasta & pizza plus tasting the Caponnata is a must. Gluten free, vegetarian & vegan folks are catered for to an extent - apps and guidebooks are handy to find places. Without rushing or going to the beach we arrived on Monday and left on Fri and that was plenty of time to see everthing we wanted. Enjoy!

Ortigia Island is a beautiful place, lots of great architecture, very clean. Interesting sites to see and many boat trips available to take you around the island. There are other places of interest in Siracusa and public transport to take you other parts of Sicily. Many places to eat and if you don't mind walking other sites outside of Ortigia Island are within 30/40 minutes walking.

Visiting the archeological park is very nice, I recommend going early in the morning (8.30AM) before big tourist groups start arriving.
Ortigia is also a great place to go: besides sightseeing objects, I particularly recommend via Cavour with lovely small artisan shops.
A Putia near Fontana di Diana seemed to be a small diner appreciated both by locals and tourists. Good food, reasonable prices, ok service.

Ortigia is amazing, so much great food, and lovely to walk around. There isn't more than a day's worth of sight-seeing on the island, plus the Archaeological sites in Siracusa, but it is an excellent home base for day trips around south-east Sicily. And perfect for a relaxing holiday - coffee and a pastry in front of the duomo, a walk around the island and a little shopping (mostly touristy stuff unfortunately), and a gelato looking out over the water on the promenade. Very friendly people, lovely architecture and history around every corner, fantastic restaurants, and even in February, SUN!
Beautifully restored and decorated bed and breakfast in a perfect location to visit Syracuse and Ortigia. 10 min walk and you are at the crossing bridge to beautiful Ortigia. 10 min drive and you are at the archeological park. Stefania, owner of the bed and breakfast, is an amazing hostess, kind, helpful, and will serve you the most
wonderful pastries you could try in
Sicily either at the chic indoor dinning area or in the beautiful terrace. Free street parking is a plus! Looking forward to going back!
Lovely hosts. Excellent breakfast and views from breakfast on roof. Great location. The arranged parking was great, although we did'nt dare drive again in Ortigia unril we had to leave. The hostess also clued me in to the fact that Caravaggio's "Burial of St Lucy [Santa Lucia]" is NOT in the church of Santa Lucia in Piazza Duomo, Ortigia, but in the chuch of Santa Lucia in mainland Syracuse. Otherwise, I might have thought the painting was simply not available for viewing and missed it.
My fiance Kerrie and I just stayed at the excellent Avolio tailored rooms it was our very favourite stay in Sicily, we really enjoyed our stay it was spotlessly clean, Emmie was there help us with everything so friendly great breakfast and Bianca was excellent in communicating with us and gave great recommendations for ortigia they are a great team!! The accommodation is right in the hear of ortigia very convenient and just the best !! Just go you won’t regret it !!!

Beautiful property with a lovely courtyard in the back, with free on-site parking. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and appointed with many antiques, and it’s in a great location that is just steps away from the main archeological attractions in Siracusa proper (Neapolis park, Museum Paolo Orsi, San Giovanni catacombs). Also, Sebiana is the nicest and most helpful host we’ve met on our trip to Sicily (and that’s saying a lot, as all of our hosts in Sicily have been amazing).
Absolutely loved the Portobello apartment. Even though it’s not located in the heart of Ortigia, it’s so convenient to walk in just a few minutes with the added convenience of free street parking or paid lot parking nearby. The apartment is spacious and clean and well equipped. I could’ve lived there for months. The WiFi is some of the fasted we’ve seen in Sicily, or anywhere for that matter. Shower was super hot, bed was super comfortable, and two TVs!
Breakfast was very good , very rich . The location was good , walking distance to Ortigia. The rooms are very well designed and comfortable. The hotel and rooms were very clean. During one week in Sicily this is the best hotel which we have accommodated compare to Palermo and Taormina hotels which were at similar price levels . The hotel has very good fish restaurant bu the sea and in the center. Strongly recommended.” Onda Blue and Onda blue by sea”
it’s a great location for a stay in Syracuse, easy to access Ortigia on foot and park the car. Also it is on the hop on hop bus
off route which makes a quick connection to the archeological sites in Syracuse.
Highlights of the stay, the view, the accommodation all very nice finishes, comfortable bed and good pillows. Usage of washer machine was a great bonus . Very accommodating and helpful hosts.
The stay exceeded our expectations. The host helped with everything he could. He recommended the best places to visit and a restaurant. We even got vouchers for a free delicious breakfast 100m from the hotel. Perfect location. A big plus for the decor of the hotel. You could feel the atmosphere of real Sicily. Thank you for everything :)
Elenora and Renato were extraordinarily friendly and did everything to help me enjoy the attractions of Siracusa and Ortigia. We had interesting conversations about film as they are very involved in this art. The apartment was simply lovely and exceeded my expectations. Everything was superb. It was the best place I have stayed at in Sicily.
The apartment was perfect….in fact the best accommodation we had in Sicily. Incredible location with fantastic balcony overlooking a beautiful small piazza. The apartment was stylishly decorated with everything you need. Helen was a fantastic host and Ortigia is amazing…..we would return in a heartbeat.
Absolutely great accomodation - incredible location, view on the main square of Ortigia, super friendly owner and convenient self check-in. Probably there's no better option to absorb the charm of this wonderful corner of Sicily.
Henry's House is a beautiful property, lovingly cared for. The welcome and service throughout our stay were outstanding. The breakfast is one of the best in Sicily. The views are exquisite and the location is perfect.
Centrally located. Close to a small sandy beach and close to many restaurants and gelaterias. Ortigia is the prettiest, cleanest part of Sicily that I’ve seen so far, 14 days in Sicily. Highly recommend Five Rooms.
Probably the best accommodation we had during our whole trip to Sicily. Very nice, spacious and modern apartment right in the middle of Ortigia. I would go there anytime again! And Andrea was amazing, too!
Loved it here! Fantastic location, right in the heart of the old city. Breakfast was really so AMAZING!!! Our favourite for the whole trip to Sicily. Beautiful room and communal areas. Wonderful stay!
The manager was very friendly. He gave a lot of useful information concerning Siracusa. The bedroom was one of the nicest I have stayed in on this trip to Sicily. Highly recoommended
Newly renovated apartment in the heart of Ortigia (Siracusa) Couldn't have ask for more. If you are planning a vacation or short trip to Sicily, this is a great place to make base.
