Good for a relaxing one or two-day trip.
The air is refreshing and there are many nice parks where you can relax and enjoy the view of Mt.Fuji if the clouds are being cooperative.
A lot of great hotels to relax at and excellent restaurants.
I am not sure the Fuji Five lakes transportation pass is worth it unless you plan on changing locations quite often and plan to stay several days. Unlike the Hakone Frepass, it does not include any ropeways, only the buses and trains.
Kawguchiko is easier to drive around and access with a car than Hakone. Fujikawaguchiko feels less cramped and more open than Hakone, which is a bit more nestled into the heavily forested mountains.

While I like the elaborate furnishing and comfort of the hotel, a warmer and friendlier staff service would have been good. In addition given the price, shuttle service to train station should not be limited for only check in and out. Overall not really value for money if one expect better service.

The hotel was well located along the lakeside, but the carpark was away from the front of the hotel. We had a slight difficulty with a fellow guest, who deliberately blocked the last remaining carpark lot, by refusing to let us park our car. He stood in front of the lot, daring us to knock him down. Hence, this experience left a bitter taste of an otherwise acceptable experience in Kawaguchi.

We had never been to Japan before and if you type into your computer "which is the most popular destination in Japan", it will tell you Mt Fuji, so we decided to go. So did 10 million other tourists!!!! It was a busy place especially around the bus/train station.
You have to visit the mountain, but watch the weather otherwise it could be a wasted trip as we found when we reached the 3,000 m mark on the bus with rain and thick cloud cover so no amazing views. Avoid the tourist shops as they are a "rip off" price wise, and once again expect lots and lots of tourists.
The place we stayed was the cheapest non dorm accommodation we could find in the area and it was good value for money with a great host, so would recommend staying there if you are on a tight budget. The room was small compared to European room sizes, but the private bathroom and toilet were great, although access to the room was difficult with large suitcases up a spiral staircase.
There is a shopping mall 10-15 minutes walk away with a selection of places to eat (Italian, Chinese, Japanese, burger joint) . The bus trip on the Red Line to the lake(s) area is a nice half day trip and cheap.
All in all, if you have never been before, GO, it's well worth it, and a direct bus service from/to both international airports.

We rented a car and drove from Tokyo to Yamanashi and for us it was perfect. We were able to see all 5 lakes in one day going from one to the other in succession.
The restaurants in the area offer a great variety of sushi, izakaya and bbq. There is also a great Omakase restaurant nearby the hotel called Fresh Water that offers a different experience to the usual tried and tested.
On the day of our departure back to Tokyo we decided to swing by Fuji Q Highland with low expectations - the theme park is legit with a great Naruto Village, high octane rollercoaster rides and from our own experience a great haunted house that lasts the majority of an hour to walk through.
Loved it. Would definitely revist the entire area.

Fantastic staff. Superb location.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Fuji Lake Hotel. The staff persons are very caring and concerned about our well being.
The location is superb-right next to the Fuji Lake . The views of Fujisan are stunning on the other side.
There is a very nice bakery just opposite the hotel, managed by the French chef of the hotel.
The bike rental store is just across the street and there’s an Indian restaurant at walking distance with vegetarian options.
We loved this place and would love to come here again and again.
We stayed in a Japanese room with Mt Fuji view and managed to get a fantastic view of the majestic mountain. The check in was quite fast. We self-drove and there was ample of free parking spaces. The hotel even provided trolley to bring baggage up to the room! I quite like their public bath and I was able to see the snow fall into the outdoor bath area, which was so magical. The room was comfortable even though it looks rather simple. There are a few supermarkets nearby, and Fuji-Q is very nearby.
- easy self check in and check out at the lobby
- free amenities to take at the lobby, not prepared in the room
- free breakfast
- free and frequent shuttle from / to kawaguchiko station (ask the hotel for the timetable)
- walking distance to lake kawaguchiko
- near the red and green line sightseeing bus stop
- free luggage locker at the lobby. Can use before check in and after check out
- free ice machine and microwave at the lobby
- free flow coffee at the lobby (specific time only)
The hotel is super. The staff is very friendly and helpful with big smile . we arrived early and requested whether we could leave our suitcases at hotel in order to explore the lake and surroundings easily . The staff said yes without any hesitation. she also gave us town map and explained bus/boat/ropeway information. immediately we felt very warm welcome. The buffet breakfast is the best. Onsen is very comfortable. If we visit Fujikawaguchiko again we would definitely stay here.
You can choose to include meals in your stay, which I strongly recommend. This Hotel also provided FREE shuttle service from 3pm - 7pm from Lake Kawaguchiko Bus Station, and morning Shuttle to bus station from 8am - 10am. This Hotel is located just near to Yagizaki Park, which is a great spot for photos of Mt Fuji, strongly recommend. Oh and did I mention the Hot Springs in the Hotel is really awesome, they have indoor and outdoor Onsen/Hot Springs.
The location was easy to get to. We decided to walk from Kawaguchiko Station to the hotel. We were not strapped for time, so this was a great way for us to explore everything along the way. Once we got to the hotel, we were happily greeted and treated to a wonderful cup of tea. The views from the room were amazing. On checkout day, they have a shuttle to the station which makes it even more convenient.
Best guest house in Fujikawaguchiko! The owners are the nicest!!! Its got all you need for a lovely stay. Everything was super neat and tidy. Free coffee, japanese snacks and bike rental was a huge plus. The view you get of mt fuji from the rooftop and windows was absolutely stunning! I really enjoyed my stay. Arigato gozaimas 🩵
The breakfast was a spread! It comes with 6 side dishes, 1 miso soup, 1 main dish and rice. The banquet hall oversee the beautiful view of the lake.
Excellent location - easy access to many attractions around Fujikawaguchiko, ~10-15 mins drive away to most attractions. Free car parking is located directly opposite the hotel.
This hotel is a little surprise. Single room is very spacious, with bathroom inside the room. I especially enjoy the lobby. There’s wine tasting machine 24hr in the lobby, and complimentary welcome drinks and snack in the lobby from 3-7pm. Free shuttle to the Kawaguchiko station, very convenient.
The main reason we chose this hotel was for the view of Mt Fuji, that was just magnificent. The bonus was the Onsen, the best one we experienced in Japan. The pushbike hire was another bonus find that we used to cycle around the lake, an activity which was greatly worth the effort.
The staff was very helpful, as one would expect in Japan, but the level of their English was quite exceptional! If you struggle with speaking the local language, consider accommodation in this hotel/ryokan.
At dinner, they were very considerate towards our dietary limitations.
The staff was amazing and very kind, the location was great and we saw Mt. Fuji from our window!
The room offered traditional Japanese lifestyle, such as kimono, tatami, green tea and Japanese sweets.
We got early check-in to the room, and the parking was near the hotel.
real ryokan operation, good breakfast and it’s located in front of the lake and near the rope way. the shuttle bus will operate during 8-10 am only from/to Kawaguchiko Sta. to the hotel so pls schedule your time. the staff tried to help you in English but not good enough.
Traditional style hotel but really enjoyed the experience.
The staff were amazing and helpful.
The Japanese style breakfast and dinner is really nice.
The open air bath with views of Mt Fuji is nice, but just keep in mind that the shower is also outside.
Free shuttle to and from Kawaguchiko station, view of mt. Fuji outside the hotel at the back, free buffet breakfast, tastes good, we love the curry rice and the bread, short walk to Kawaguchiko lake with the best view of Mt. Fuji, value for money
Onsen style bath with Mt. Fuji view.
Walkable distance from the Fujikawaguchiko station when the shuttle bus didn’t show up in time. The restaurant in front of the hotel with home cooking style menu was good and convenient.
It was a large room, traditional japanese style and amazing views. The hotel is right on the lake kawaguchiko, friendly staff and great facilities. We have really enjoyed staying here.
