Mount Aso and Kurokawa Onsen were the highlight of the trip.
Mount Aso and Kurokawa Onsen were the highlight of the trip. Absolutely worth the drive out to go and experience both places. Kumamoto Castle was also incredible, though going inside the castle was kind of a disappointment. The outside of the Castle is the highlight, and although there are some nice artifacts to look at inside, it is mainly a warm shoulder to shoulder cue of trying to get to the top, which itself is just smudge class and heat to rival a sauna.
The local foods are a must! Kumamoto ramen gives that extra kick you want when having tonkotsu ramen, and basashi (horse meat) sashimi is a unique must for those who don't live in Japan to experience.
Very easy to get around with a car, but with the tram system and the busses having English on the header (something we could with in Nagasaki) it looks like navigating public transport would be easier than most places for English speaking foreign visitors.

Kunamoto is a bit off the tourist route, but has a tidy and peaceful demeanour with a beautifully designed shopping mall in the middle of town. The castle is close by as well.
Just be aware that the onsen are grossly misleading. The normal price us JPY400-700, but this lot want to extort over JPY4000! Absolute rip off. Alternatively, they market themselves as "public" bath, but when the public turn up to give them money, the venue rewrites the dictionary buy defining "public" as "private" for accommodation guests only!

Kumamoto is a nice and much quieter city where you can enjoy a relaxing holiday. The main attractions are mostly located outside the city central, such as Mount Aso.
You can travel around the city using some new and retro trams, or public buses.

Old meets new - everything from 500+ year old incredible...
Old meets new - everything from 500+ year old incredible castles and amazing gardens surrounding ancient temples (Suizenji Jujoen), to the three year old and stunning Sakuramachi Kumamoto building with green areas on every balcony and rooftop, to the fabulous nightlife and shopping around Shimotori, Kamitori, Nishiginzatori and Sunroad Shishigai Streets. My absolute favourite part of the city (have been coming for decades since I was a high school exchange student…), my first time at Candeo Hotel Kumamoto, but I will definitely be returning! So easy to get around, everything within walking distance (and all undercover or with underground walkway areas for when it’s raining), so safe, beautifully clean, and public transport is simple too.
Very good hotel, you immediately feel like you are in a high-quality accommodation. The lobby is new and huge, the rooms are big, and the AC is controllable. The staff were great, had amazing English and helped us with the parking space as well as recommendations for traveling to Aso (they even called the place for us to get more information regarding the specific day). Location is central - and within walking distance to the shopping arcades, castle, or Luffy.
Excellent location. You can go from Kumamoto station to the hotel very easy by city tram.
The hotel is near to Kumamoto castle, Shimotori shopping arcade, convenience store, and many restaurant.
The hotel is new facilities, there are microwave, ice maker, vending machine. The rooms are big and the beds are comfortable. Air conditioner can adjust for heating or cooling.
The hotel staff are very nice.
The hotel is amazing. The price was a little high for me, but it's totally worth it! The breakfast is trully amazing and the sky spa is incredible. It's a great hotel to stop at if like me you are planning to hike Aso and want a good night of sleep, spa rest and a good fullfilling meal. Not the mention the view on the Kumamoto Castle from the hotel. The staff was great and thoughful.
This is a rather big hotel in downtown of Kumamoto with good facilities and rooms. There is also lift parking which cost 1100 Y / night. There is a very near Tonkatsu restaurant ( 300 meter) far from the hotel .which is very good. It is 7 mins. drive from the hotel to Kumamoto castle. Overall rating is high for this hotel. Good buffet breakfast too.
It was close to the bus terminal, there’s a tram station down the road, and staff was kind. The hotel is away from the shopping and bar district, so it’s nice and quiet, although you can easily get there by foot. It’s a straight seven minute walk to Kumamoto Castle, too, with a city park between the castle and the hotel.
It was close to Kumamoto Castle which was one reason we chose it.
Having parking available was another of the reasons we chose this hotel.
Great size room and we were treated very well by the staff.
Close to shops and restaurants.
Would stay again if we were ever back in Kumamoto
The hotel was in a convenient location, very close to shopping, a variety of restaurants and Kumamoto Castle. The breakfast wasn’t bad and they offered a blend of western and Japanese food. Not a huge selection but the eggs were real. Morning wasn’t bad either.
The location of the hotel was very good. It was close to the Kumamoto castle, Kumamoto station, shopping center etc, so we could walk there. The room was very clean. Big kumamon (Big bear character stuff animal) welcomed us. We enjoyed staying there.
Good location, in same building as bus terminal. Convenient for us to hitch the bus early morning. Near to tram stops. Within walking distance to Castle. Many eating options in the mall and nearby area. Friendly and helpful staff.
It was a very good value for our money and it was in a good location, right next to Kumamoto castle and the train station was about 10 minutes walk away, the place was big enough for two people
The staff were very accommodating, and staff went above and beyond. The hotel was clean throughout. the view from our hotel room was amazing, had a view of Kumamoto Castle too.
The location of the hotel is very good. It is at a walking distance from Kumamoto castle, there are many restaurants and karaoke places nearby as well as a shopping mall.
The room was comfortable and well designed. Our room had an excellent city view and Kumamoto castle. Bathrooms were spacious and downstairs patio area was a nice bonus
The room is a good size for two people, clean, beautifully decorated, and has a view of the castle from the room.
