Located in a mountainous area within a lovely little town. A short walk to both nature (paths and stairs, fireflies) and small craft shops and experiences.
The main hot spring bath was enjoyable along with a spacious outside bath (rotemburo). In addition, we also enjoyed a number of their seven private baths - something that we had never experienced in Japan.
Buffet meals were excellent!
Shuzenji was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the hot spring after a long drive.

The Japanese design room was great and the private onsen was amazing! The room was very spacious and comfortable! The food at the restaurant was really good too! The staff was helpful, even though some of them struggled with english. Their shuttle service between the buildings seemed frequent and convenient.

Fabulous large Japanese style room on the top floor overlooking the beach. Flasks of boiling water and iced water delivered twice a day. A very warm welcome from an English speaker ( though there were only 2 in the whole hotel)
Our deal included dinner and breakfast. Exceptional evening meals of many courses, some of which we had to cook ourselves at the table. Great fun. Breakfast was a really good buffet.
The Onsen was lovely.

Comfortable, clean with lots of amenities. Loved the option of it being pet friendly! We adventure with our fur baby as much as we can, and it’s so nice to be able to stay somewhere that allows her to come.
We also loved the warm coffee table. It was a pleasant surprise as we have never experienced one before.

There is a more to explore here than we realized. Apart from hiking up hills for great views, we did not budget enough time for more sight-seeing. We had wanted to visit a wasabi farm but wound up at a wasabi market which was really cool with lots of wasabi based products - that was an experience in itself. Probably best explored by car.

It was a lovely small town, a welcome change from busy cities crowded with tourists. Very relaxing, beautiful hot springs in the middle of town, a charming temple and shrine surrounded by huge cedar trees. We stayed twi nights and really enjoyed it. From Shuzenji station you can take bus to a viewing area where if the weather conditions are right you can view Mt Fuji.

A car or bike is really essential to get around, and see the the sights, as buses may only run a few times each day.
Doi Gold Mine is an excellent working museum, lots to see and touch, even handle the pure gold ingots weighing 12.5kg. You can even do some gold panning. 400 metres of caves have been prepared as an example of the old hand-dug mines, 30 cm per day.
Mihama beach is great for families, sheltered, with good facilities, and the nearby Heda museum documenting Japan-Russian relations.
Lots of small coastal towns, with some places to stay, though many restaurants close early, and there are very few convenience stores, meaning you need to stock up and plan your trip and meals.
Food is mainly sea food, izakayas, the odd Italian and Chinese restaurant, and some tea/ coffee shops. Not really a culinary hot spot. Beach restaurants serve ramen, hot dogs, yakisoba, and other fast foods.
Quite a few abandoned places, relics of the bubble era.

public transport is very difficult, expensive and quite rare, make sure to check timetables (all in japanese by the way) because you can end up waiting hours for the next bus. But very beautiful and many many things to see so leave a lot of time and maybe rent a car if you can

The seafood is fantastic.

The seafood is fantastic.
Bad parts:
The Toi sakura is a little disappointing for the volume is far from enough. And the traffic is not so convenient considering most buses only come once an hour.
Hands down the best property we stayed at during our two week long Japan trip. Absolutely wonder rooms with view of the Kano river and the private onsens were the icing on the cake! While most onsen resorts only allow you to use their provate onsens by reservation & limited no. of times per stay, Tatsuta Ryokan lets you use the 4 private onsens how many ever times you want depending on availability!
The breakfast by the river was scrumptious and sp filling! 10/10 would go again and might even stay for longer than we did this time.
This is an amazing ryokan. The staff is extremely friendly and nice. They do all and everything to make your stay memorable. The public onsen in the ryokan was great, very serene atmosphere. The room was huge, with a private onsen. All the facilities are very clean. The food (dinner and breakfast) is amazing, tasty and beautiful. The city is nice and quiet, great to walk around. There is a small bamboo forest, a river runs thru it, nice buildings. Picturesque!
the garden is really beautiful, could be seen from lobby, cafe , restaurant, room and Olsen.
staff very friendly.
great breakfast and dinner, contents different every day during our stay.
hotel that many novelties stayed, also place for TV dramas.
easy walking distance to attractions.
free drinks cafe.
lucky to meet the 2nd generation owner, took photos together, he still takes care of the garden, and I could see he enjoy it!
Staff were very sweet and despite a language barrier all interactions were great. The owner gave my partner and I some oranges on the morning of checkout as a very nice gesture. The onsens were very nice and worth the money, perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring Izu.
I was shocked when I arrived this to this hotel, I had no idea it would be so nice and comfortable. Our room was gorgeous, the breakfast and dinner was delicious, and the staff were so friendly and helpful. There was also a huge variety in the baths offered.
Gorgeous forest location by the river and beautiful onsen facilities. Clean and comfortable. The tatami rooms with private onsen are recommended for a full experience. Restaurant by the river is also pretty magical. Recently renovated rooms are wonderful.
The service was excellent, and the food was great.
I like the onsen. It’s private outdoor onsen is very comfortable. At night, you could see the stars while bathing.
The room is spacious. Great experience, the only disadvantage is it’s price…
Amazing value for money, with all the facilities such as Karaoke, table tennis, billiard, and game center. Onsen was available, and facility was great. Dinner and breakfast was very tasty too and can't believe it was under 100 dollars a night!!
One of the most efficiently run hotels that I’ve been to. The whole system is seamless and the quality of the food was also excellent. Hot springs pools are devine. I now would like to stay in all other hotels run by this corporation.
Although we are late arrival, property still waiting us patiently.
All facilities were clean and well maintained.
All staff were excellent and sincerely.
Food were delicious
Close to the izu zoo and mt omuro, 10mins to drive.
Everything was authentically Japanese at this place! Stunning sea view from the room, fresh & delicious local food, and world class services! My family thoroughly enjoyed Toi largely contributing to this exceptional hotel.
Not the first time for us to stay here. Amazing place in the middle of the forest, just as the name suggests. Great cottages with all the amenities. Excellent hot spring. Can use the facilities of the nearby Mariott Hotel.
Staff was warm and welcoming. Even though I do not speak Japanese the communication worked well. Staff went the extra mile in the food preparation, the arrangement of the room and the arrangement for usage of the onsen.
traditional ryokan room, comfortable pillows (traditional bean and soft) and the duvet/comforter was very soft. Amazing views. Friendly staff. The onsen is lovely with nice products. The breakfast was great value.
In the centre of the cute part of Shuzenji, with multiple onsen in the neighbourhood :). Very nice and chill hostel with an amazing owner that has many good recommendations for things to do and restaurants.
Top class hospitality and staff! Japanese breakfast was a highlight for us, as well as being welcomed with champagne. Stocked mini bar, comfortable beds and each room has a very private onsen bath.
There was a great small onsen right around the corner, the shower was great, we loved the capsule beds. I could have used a little thicker mats, but really nice. The staff was amazing.
Really nice and small town to stay overnight. I received great help from the lovely hotel staff. Good customer service and nice hot spring. I really enjoyed my time there.
