Hikkaduwa was lovely- the beaches are not too big, but are great for swimming. I loved the turtle beach where 4 turtles could be seen morning and evening in the water. I also had the fortune to be in Hikkaduwa when the baby turtles were hatching and witnessed when they were released in the evening around sunset. The sunsets in Hikkaduwa are really unreal. The water is quite clear and so hot. What else can you want from a beach town. I personally spent most of my meals at the Hungry Bug. They offer a great selection of local food and some western food too. Everything is fresh and cooked on the spot.

This is an ideal destination for those seeking adventure, relaxation, and immersion in nature. It offers a plethora of activities, including exploring the Kanneliya rainforest, enjoying kayak or traditional boat rides in the lagoon, encountering turtles on the beach, and indulging in the variety of restaurants and souvenir shops available nearby. Truly, it has something for everyone.

The area had a good mix of shops, bars etc and prices were reasonable. You can choose to stay in central higher end hotels or cheaper options on the periphery but tuktuks only cost about 700rps from one end to the other. Perhaps 1500rps in the evening. We preferred staying outside the main area because it was much quieter but so easy to walk into town along the beautiful beach.

There’s lots of loungers on the beach. The beach directly in front is too rough for swimming or snorkelling. It’d be perfect if you’re a surfer- but if you want to swim it’s a little bit of a walk past turtle beach to the swimming area. We luckily had a chance to taste her Western-style pasta which was really delicious. She offered us free of charge and served us without a request from us likely a surprise dinner. However, we asked her to charge for dinner and she denied it and just smiled. The staff was all friendly and attentive.

So if you are planning a surf lesson and you are staying at Universal it’s worth to negotiate a price for the surf lesson. The surf teachers are real professionals and will take care of you. Our poolside room was very well furnished with plenty of sockets and large good quality bathroom. Food and drink very reasonably priced. Good breakfast and coffee. Best of all were the staff who are all very friendly and helpful.
