International, Yet Unique
One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, picturesque Maastricht has an international feel. Not only can you walk to Belgium and bike to Germany, this town also gave birth to the European Union and euro currency following the 1992 Maastricht Treaty.
Its largest square – Vrijthof – houses the twin churches of St. Jan and St. Servaas, a theater and several sidewalk cafes. Various festivals and the Magic Maastricht Christmas markets are also held here. Markt square is home to the Flemish-style town hall, a twice-weekly market and even more restaurants and bars offering great nightlife.

Maastricht is an interesting city with quite some history. The municipality of maastricht provides a clear overview of the city's offerings, such as museums and guided tours. The maastricht museum is certainly worth it. Maastricht is 'gezellig' as they say in Dutch with lots of restaurants and stalls. They really seem to live a bit less fast than inhabitants of Randstad cities. City centre looks lovely and picturesque, a bit un-Dutch even (outskirts look like any other typical Dutch village). Maastricht is absolutely beautiful! There is a lot to do and see and plenty of places to eat or have a drink. We had a fabulous lunch at Vanbuuren on the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein, where the service went extra mile and then some! We can to see the amazing Andre Rieu. We stayed 3 nights. The property was exceptional. The concert exceeded my expectations and was such an amazing experience. The pubs and restaurants are fab. We made some lovely friends too. We went on a boat ride down the muse. Eat some beautiful pastries and shopped lots. Gorgeous little city with so much history. - not to mention shopping, fab little boutiques and unique shops. Taking the little train through the streets and park etc was worth it - so much history to see and learn. Also the boat trip was amazing - what a beautiful boat with welcoming, polite and friendly staff on board. Highly recommend doing both trips. Maastricht was a big surprise.
Maastricht was a big surprise. I didn't know what to expect, but what I got went far and beyond anything I imagined. It is a wonderful city that felt very safe. Plenty of meandering streets, cafes and restaurants. Tours are plentiful and bicycle renting is all very simple. The city is serviced by an extensive array of cycle routes to explore the city centre and nearby countryside safely on dedicated cycle tracks.
