Nice little city to explore for a few days at the end of a two week trip to Puerto Rico. I always explore the capital last when visiting a country, gives me a chance to explore the culture before diving into the big smoke.
Old San Juan is a charming architectural town, but is invaded by cruise ships daily. By the evening the ships clear off and the streets are quieter.
A lot of restaurants close reasonably early which is something that takes some getting used to. So if you want the widest choice, be seated around 8pm.
If you're looking for a good beer and empanada, visit Deshistoria: Birra & Empanadas. If you're looking for an excellent dive bar visit El Batey Bar.
Don't be afraid to visit the old barrio of La Perla, on the northern old town waterfront. Some lively little bars on the seafront where music, dancing and ice cold beers flow.
For a real flavour of local life in the capital you really need to explore around the Santurce area. Loads of local eateries and a vibrant nightlife scene.
Santurce is also a great area to check out some of PR's best street art.
San Juan isn't cheap, so don't expect a bargain stay. Old San Juan being the most expensive of the neighborhoods. Tipping 15% is also the norm at most establishments.
If you're visiting PR, I highly recommend hiring a car and getting out of the city. Driving is safe and simple with 24/7 hire companies at the airport. Fuel is priced per litre and isn't that expensive given the small size of the island and decent road conditions.
The best food can be found in many out of the way places along the road, not necessarily in town, so if it's busy when you pass by, stop, get yourself a table and tuck in to whatever everyone else is eating. You won't be disappointed.

Meals were fantastic at The Royal Sonesta Resort, but very large portions and pricey. Ruth Kris on site was a wonderful option to celebrate and we were able to make reservations with ease using opentable app. Loved the room, but the view of the ugly roof top could be improved with a little artistic imagination. Maybe paint the roof below those balcony ocean view rooms with a large wave mural camouflage replicating the blue turquoise ocean waves and white sands. Was distracting from the beautiful resort and ocean views. Old San Juan tour was beautiful and wonderful History. Manatee and Turtle excursion was cancelled with the bipolar weather of April - rain and too windy 'unusual according to the locals'. There were lots of beautiful adventures to explore but we didn't have enough time to see a lot of the fun stuff. Bioluminescent tour, rainforest, mountains, and hikes to the water falls, snorkeling with turtles, Bicardi Rum Factory. I didn't get to experience, but will definitely return to do so another time. Locals say to be leary of certain areas at night.
We took a taxi from the airport to the hotel for $20 plus tip,and returned hotel to AP with an Uber XL for $16 plus tip. We disembarked from our cruise and took the old and new San Juan Excursion with the cruiseline, so all our luggage was transferred including the carryons and we didn't have to lug it around while waiting before Hotel check in time at 4pm. We arrived early at the hotel and enjoyed lunch then the pool and waited for a text to inform us later that day when the room was ready. We had just room service that first night, second night was at Ruth Kris.

I was in the Santurce arts district at a cheaper hotel, and I'm glad I did that. The beach scene is kind of trashy, but might be fine for some folks. The Old San Juan area is a tourist place, though some good restaurants. Definitely see the Colon and el Morro forts.
If I were to do it again, I'd rent a car and get out of San Juan to have multiple days for el Yunque and other natural areas, and to just drive around the rest of the island.
You can uber around, or rent scooters, and the busses go to the main places you'd want to visit.

North, south and east water fronts are walking distance.
North, south and east water fronts are walking distance. Walk the del Morro shore trail for beautiful views, iguanas and many outdoor cats. Shopping, restaurants and bars galore. We loved Kaffe Haus for breakfast, and La Taberna Lupulo has many craft beers and fabulous fish tacos. Warning: it is hot and very humid. Rains a lot!

Puerto Rico is an island, but we are conservative in our way of dressing, and walk with in our bathing suits only in the beach.
Please be aware that not all the beaches are safe for swimming. San Juan faces the North Atlantic, with its strong currents.
Please do not walk the streets with expensive jewelry.
Park in paid parking, if possible.
Loved this property! It was just as the photos looked, it was like an apartment-style hotel. With the shared pool, and common space. Make sure you check on the beach 5 minutes away! It's gorgeous :) The room amenities had everything you needed great shampoo, soap etc., and lots of towels! The staff was very friendly and helpful with whatever I needed :) While, the pool is small, its very helpful if you are trying to catch some rays since it is hot! Very -boho cute, and there is a Starbucks + grocery store right across the street.
It was a great location in the heart of Old San Juan and one of the more affordable options available on short notice. It certainly had... character, and in that respect was much more memorable than your basic hotel. The owner was quirky and had an adorable french bulldog. The skylight of the room was nice and had a chorus of coqui frogs around it to lull us to sleep. Mini fridge, TV, and AC all worked great. One of the few places we stayed that had the AC turned on for our arrival which is a nice welcome.
Fantastic location! The apartment is right on the beach and close to many shops and restaurants. It is easy to get what you need. The hosts were also kind and responsive to questions. The apartment was spacious and designed nicely. It was also great to have a balcony. While there wasn't a pool accessible to the building, we were allowed to use the pool and hot tub of a hotel that was about a 10-minute walk away. That hotel was beautiful and the hotel's customer service was great.
This was our second visit to Hotel El Convento and our experience all the way around was outstanding. The hotel is close to everything of interest in Old San Juan. The entire staff offered topflight professional service and checking in and out was straightforward and quick. We went to the reception which the hotel manager offers every afternoon and it was enjoyable and relaxing. The views of the bay from the fifth floor (pool area) are spectacular, especially at sunset.
The front desk staff was exceptional. Christian especially but also another woman (I cannot remember her name, shoulder-length curly hair, glasses, excellent English) were both amazing. You couldn't ask for better representation than these two. They deserve some comp time or a raise or something. We came with an athletic team and our teammates were staying at several different hotels in the area. Ours was by far the most attentive and personable. Will stay here again!
The location was 5 to 10 min, walking or uber, to most places in San Juan. The amenties were convenient. Having access to both facilities was a plus. One side lagoon the other the beach. The view was gorgeous during the day and at night. All the staff were very nice. We would've extended our stay but the hotel was sold out for a wedding. We have been to San Juan 5 times and always stay somewhere different but we will stay here again next time.
This hotel is EVERYTHING. We were there for our 26th wedding anniversary with friends and it was amazing. The staff were so nice & accommodating. Helping my husband with dinner reservations, drinks on the beach, bug spray (there are sandflies) and sunblock. They are amazing.. We all wanted to stay an extra day but the hotel was booked. So be sure to book an extra day! :) I promise you will love this place. We all did!
A delightful small hotel, with thoughtful design elements throughout and a beautiful walled garden in the middle of a dense suburban area. Room was very nicely decorated and enjoyed the attached "outdoor" shower (very private).
Hotel is fairly distant from many San Juan attractions, but if you have a car, it works well. Also many restaurant are walkable in 10 minutes.
Fun spot right on the beach with popular bar/restaurant that had outdoor seating looking at the ocean. Being a smaller hotel, it felt more personal. Beds comfortable, showers hot. Free coffee in the foyer. Staff are outstanding. Thanks Jacob for taking care of all our needs! Location to so many restaurants within walking distance.
The staff here was super helpful and friendly, they were willing to help us with our luggage. The location was super convenient while being less crowded than those in Old San Juan area or Condado Beach. We walked to the beach with in 5 minutes. The aesthetic of the design of the hotel was brilliant. We had a wonderful time here.
The location is perfect to explore Old San Juan by foot. The hotel is located in the middle of everything, close to many sights, shops, great restaurants, coffee shops and bars. The hotel itself is beautiful, authentic and has a very unique charm. The room and pool area were clean and the staff friendly and accommodating.
The location was central to all of San Juan. Great staff: friendly, knowledgeable & accommodating! The hotel was absolutely picturesque & exceeded the reviews. Overall, this was a lovely experience & the historical component made it even more of a gem. Loved the rooftop views - great scenery to take in.
Price was great for Friday night near cruise port. Old San Juan location was very good. Hotel was clean and very secure. Nice working elevator. Walking distance to many good restaurants and shops and other hotels. We walked to our Virgin Voyages cruise ship terminal.
Highlighted by the expansive shared rooftop offering breathtaking city views.
The hotel's central location proved advantageous, providing convenient access to Old San Juan and other key areas, enhancing the overall appeal and accessibility for guests.
Perfectly situated in Old San Juan, the hotel was a perfect home base for exploring the city. Our room was clean and comfortable. The staff was very helpful and friendly. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
Really good location!
Hotel is really nice and as everything inside that is needed.
We were visiting the island and didn't get to try everything out but still had a look around.
Hotel has experienced some updating. It's located in Old San Juan area near the ports. So if you are cruising no need to rent a car. Plenty to do in Old San Juan.
