Nice little city to explore for a few days at the end of a two week trip to Puerto Rico. I always explore the capital last when visiting a country, gives me a chance to explore the culture before diving into the big smoke.
Old San Juan is a charming architectural town, but is invaded by cruise ships daily. By the evening the ships clear off and the streets are quieter.
A lot of restaurants close reasonably early which is something that takes some getting used to. So if you want the widest choice, be seated around 8pm.
If you're looking for a good beer and empanada, visit Deshistoria: Birra & Empanadas. If you're looking for an excellent dive bar visit El Batey Bar.
Don't be afraid to visit the old barrio of La Perla, on the northern old town waterfront. Some lively little bars on the seafront where music, dancing and ice cold beers flow.
For a real flavour of local life in the capital you really need to explore around the Santurce area. Loads of local eateries and a vibrant nightlife scene.
Santurce is also a great area to check out some of PR's best street art.
San Juan isn't cheap, so don't expect a bargain stay. Old San Juan being the most expensive of the neighborhoods. Tipping 15% is also the norm at most establishments.
If you're visiting PR, I highly recommend hiring a car and getting out of the city. Driving is safe and simple with 24/7 hire companies at the airport. Fuel is priced per litre and isn't that expensive given the small size of the island and decent road conditions.
The best food can be found in many out of the way places along the road, not necessarily in town, so if it's busy when you pass by, stop, get yourself a table and tuck in to whatever everyone else is eating. You won't be disappointed.

Meals were fantastic at The Royal Sonesta Resort, but very large portions and pricey. Ruth Kris on site was a wonderful option to celebrate and we were able to make reservations with ease using opentable app. Loved the room, but the view of the ugly roof top could be improved with a little artistic imagination. Maybe paint the roof below those balcony ocean view rooms with a large wave mural camouflage replicating the blue turquoise ocean waves and white sands. Was distracting from the beautiful resort and ocean views. Old San Juan tour was beautiful and wonderful History. Manatee and Turtle excursion was cancelled with the bipolar weather of April - rain and too windy 'unusual according to the locals'. There were lots of beautiful adventures to explore but we didn't have enough time to see a lot of the fun stuff. Bioluminescent tour, rainforest, mountains, and hikes to the water falls, snorkeling with turtles, Bicardi Rum Factory. I didn't get to experience, but will definitely return to do so another time. Locals say to be leary of certain areas at night.
We took a taxi from the airport to the hotel for $20 plus tip,and returned hotel to AP with an Uber XL for $16 plus tip. We disembarked from our cruise and took the old and new San Juan Excursion with the cruiseline, so all our luggage was transferred including the carryons and we didn't have to lug it around while waiting before Hotel check in time at 4pm. We arrived early at the hotel and enjoyed lunch then the pool and waited for a text to inform us later that day when the room was ready. We had just room service that first night, second night was at Ruth Kris.

I was in the Santurce arts district at a cheaper hotel, and I'm glad I did that. The beach scene is kind of trashy, but might be fine for some folks. The Old San Juan area is a tourist place, though some good restaurants. Definitely see the Colon and el Morro forts.
If I were to do it again, I'd rent a car and get out of San Juan to have multiple days for el Yunque and other natural areas, and to just drive around the rest of the island.
You can uber around, or rent scooters, and the busses go to the main places you'd want to visit.

North, south and east water fronts are walking distance. Walk the del Morro shore trail for beautiful views, iguanas and many outdoor cats. Shopping, restaurants and bars galore. We loved Kaffe Haus for breakfast, and La Taberna Lupulo has many craft beers and fabulous fish tacos. Warning: it is hot and very humid. Rains a lot!

Puerto Rico is an island, but we are conservative in our way of dressing, and walk with in our bathing suits only in the beach.
Please be aware that not all the beaches are safe for swimming. San Juan faces the North Atlantic, with its strong currents.
Please do not walk the streets with expensive jewelry.
Park in paid parking, if possible.
If you want to be in the middle of the night life and shopping scene, this is in a great location. We just needed a place for one night before we flew back to the mainland. This is a very simple hotel on a city beach. The building is stuffed between two larger buildings so there are no views to the beach or the city. But the beach is right there. Parking is expensive unless you find one of the places on the main drag that are open air. The staff were very nice. This is a cheap hotel that is clean and no frills. A place to sleep.
Easy instructions. Secured spacious apartments in the heart of Old San Juan. We stayed in apartment #2. Very well furnished with big bedrooms. The colonial style is very beautiful with original doors, floors, beams, super high ceilings and decoration of the apartment was very well done. A/C and fans were working well. It’s well furnished too. Even master bathroom looks like a 5 star hotel. Location can’t be beaten as everything is nearby, walkable and very safe. Very good value.
Beautiful hotel in the best location in Old San Juan. Lovely and safe street close to everything. There is free wifi, free coffee in the morning and a kitchen the guests can use. There is a lovely sitting area that is super comfortable and pleasant. The hotel is clean and there is someone at reception 24 hours a day. All the staff members are very nice and provide excellent service. We loved this hotel and will come back.
This hotel is EVERYTHING. We were there for our 26th wedding anniversary with friends and it was amazing. The staff were so nice & accommodating. Helping my husband with dinner reservations, drinks on the beach, bug spray (there are sandflies) and sunblock. They are amazing.. We all wanted to stay an extra day but the hotel was booked. So be sure to book an extra day! :) I promise you will love this place. We all did!
The location in Old San Juan is excellent -- within walking distance of all of the historical sites, restaurants, shops, etc. I'd recommend this hotel for its location and price even though the room and the hotel itself are just okay/good enough. Though check-out is early (10:30am), it was nice that we were able to store our luggage next door for a few hours so we could enjoy our last morning walking around town.
the hotel is truly a boutique experience. it’s right ON THE BEACH and that’s a 10 alone. The restaurant is delicious and the staff were lovely and friendly. Tons of restaurants within walking distance. I’m a swimmer so I loved the ocean but it can be rough. thankfully all beaches are about a $5 Uber ride away. The staff will hold your bags on both check in and out while you enjoy your day and are very welcoming.
- great location near a ton of restaurants (and fine to uber to Old San Juan etc for activities, or walkable to hotels nearby that are usually pick up/drop off for tours)
- no keys to worry about losing or deactivating, just access codes for the doors
- they let me use a quick shower after check out since I had a water activity in the morning and then had to head to a flight
This is a very basic hotel. There are a few amenities like a small kitchen area (in the hotel, not the room) but don't expect anything fancy. That said, the staff were very pleasant and helpful, the rooms were clean and it felt secure. The location is excellent for both access to the beach (good surfing one beach over) and the airport. Old Town is a short cab or Uber away.
Perfect location!!! Since we arrive at the hotel the check in staff were friendly and professional the room was beautiful and with a San Juan bay view!
Is a gorgeous hotel with shops, restaurants and Cafe, we enjoy the infiniti pool with a Old San Juan view and the servers were super nice we really had a great time we will definitely return.
This Guest House really was a hit during our trip!
This is a family hotel, the owners are super welcoming. It is located in the heart of old San Juan, close to all touristic hospital and plenty of cool bars and restaurants.
Thé place is an historical building, well renovated, clean, and the rooftop is just amazing.
i really recommend.
Fantastic property right on the beach. this boutique hotel is
very clean and nicely
decorated. easy to walk to restaurants and bars in ocean park
neighborhood and just a short ride away from old San Juan
and piñones. the staff was so friendly and helpful! The rooms
we’re spacious and beds were comfortable
The location is incredible, right in the heart of Old San Juan. We only had one evening and it was wonderful to have the opportunity to walk everywhere. The open bar was an interesting touch that allowed us to interact with other guests of the hotel.
Very nice hotel with a unique design and a good ambiance and right in the city center which is walking distant from everything in old San Juan. They also have a rooftop terrace where you can enjoy some drinks and chill under the shadow
Beautiful, new small hotel with superb location near great bars, restaurants and fun areas of Old San Juan. Really great breakfast in an elegant open terrace. Friendly courteous employees. Comfortable bed and room.
Gorgeous hotel with excellent staff. The pool is gorgeous, location right on the beach was increíble and the beach bar served tasty food. would highly recommend.
