Capital With a Small Town Feel

Charming and compact Bratislava is the world’s only capital city bordering two countries, Austria and Hungary, and centers around the beautiful Danube River. South is the modern city and a peaceful forest, but the real Bratislava attractions are over Novy Most (New Bridge), an impressive structure with a UFO-like pylon. The castle on a rock overlooking the Old Town offers the best views of it. The rock itself has a Jewish cemetery and a literally underground club.

Across the street, St. Martin’s Cathedral was the coronation site of past Hungarian kings. The cobbled streets behind are lined with outdoor restaurants and bars. The city’s specialty is treska, a cold cod salad, washed down with white wine from the nearby Small Carpathian mountains.

The main square is Hlavne namestie, home to pastel-colored buildings, a 14th-century town hall housing the city museum, and the Bratislava Christmas markets. Hodzovo namestie square features the Peace Earth sculpture and Baroque Grassalkovich Palace, the presidential residence guarded by the Slovak National Guard. Across the park is the Archiepiscopal Palace, seat of the government. All around are many Bratislava hotels, B&Bs and apartments available on Booking.com.

Before heading to Bratislava Airport, visit Kamzìk TV tower, whose revolving restaurant and observation deck offer magnificent city views.

    It is a picturesque city that needs a 2- 3 days visiut in order to fully appreciate it. We arrived by a Catamaran boat through the Danube river from Vienna. The journey lasted for 1 hour and 15 minutes and it was a very nice experience. (its a must if you are travelling from Vienna). The Old Town is very picturesque with a lot of choise for food or drink. Narrow cobbler stone streets and nicely preserved buildings give you an idea of what it would be like to live in this town 4 centuries ago. Outside the Old Town, there are lots of "Brutalism" samples of architecture. The Radio Station building and the area around it , is worth visiting.

    There is so much to do that 2 weeks wasn’t long enough, castles, monuments and good inexpensive food, nice people and over all a very beautiful city. The UFO restaurant is a must, very good food and unbelievable view the ticket price for the top is subtracted from the food you buy in the restaurant. The old town is a must see a vibrant shopping street with amazing restaurants in between I can’t wait to go back.

    This city is perfect for a 2 to 3 day break. lovely old town easy to get around. Enough to see but not overwhelming like some cities. All the food , restaurants and bars were great. Excellent place to go to visit Vienna or Budapest cheaply. Trains, trams busses all really good. Lots of quirky corners too!

    We were just traveling through Bratislava and stayed one single night. It was also our first visit to Bratislava, but there is definitelly more to see than on a single afternoon. I think a three days trip in this wonderful city will be for sure something we will do in the future.

    I tended to walk everywhere and the city is the perfect size for this. Appreciated the mix of old Soviet Era buildings and modernism. The Slavin Monument, on a hill overlooking Bratislava, was impressive. Tickets for trolley-buses are easily available from coin-payment machines near bus-stops, 30 minutes = 1.20 Euros. Most people, especially in cafes, shops etc. spoke reasonable English (I speak no Slovak) but edging out of the city it can be problematic (I had to use my phone and sign-language at Bratislava Vinohrady Train-Station to buy a return ticket to the town of Pezinok). Bratislava is compact for a Capital City, fairly relaxed and a good place to start to explore Slovakia.

    Hotel is located in the old town short walk from the historic centre. Rooms were clean and spacious. There aren't any facilities to sing and dance about. Local taxi company Bolt is able to access the property and arrange airport transfers. There is no allocated parking, no immediate public transport stop but within 30 mins walking distance you will find yourself in the old city centre with plenty of restaurants and bars.

    A very charming hotel, central in Bratislava. We loved the rooms, that portrayed different movie stars, in an old fashioned style. The room was really spacious and clean. Staff was excellent and very helpful. 10-15 min walk from the old town, in an area with many restaurants, cafes and shops. Parking was easy in the parking garage. Breakfast was healthy with a good selection. We would definitely come back here.
