Altstadt Hotel Hofwirt Salzburg, hotel in Salzburg

Dating from 1878, Altstadt Hotel Hofwirt is right next to Linzer Gasse, a pedestrian zone in the center of Salzburg.

Location was everything. Right at the entrance of the old town without being in its busy streets. There is everything around you from a convenience store (the spar that somehow happened to be closed most days we were there) to a pharmacy. Room was big and roomy and the bed comfortable. The bathroom was also spacious for euro hotels. The breakfast buffet was also very generous - honestly we did not expect all that much but honestly it was more than enough for most needs.

FAQs about hotels in Salzburg

The Hills Are Alive in Salzburg

Made famous for its “hills alive with the sound of music”, Salzburg is a very pretty town filled with romantic buildings and squares. If you are not yet aware that Mozart was born here, then you will be as soon as you land at Salzburg W.A. Mozart International Airport.

Further your education about this musical prodigy at his actual birthplace, Mozarts Geburtshaus. The city is the namesake of the Salzach River which runs through it, and alongside this beautiful river lays the Schloss Mirabell, one of the many impressive castles within the city limits. Schloss Mirabell and Hellbrunn with their picturesque gardens, beautiful galleries and impressive halls make the ideal spot for a picnic during summer.

The white-stone Hohensalzburg fortress is perched upon a green hill and offers magnificent views over the city. Or, you can escape it all in the Kapuzinerberg forest, which offers splendid Alpine vistas- a reminder of Salzburg’s natural beauty.

The shopping centre focuses around Alter Markt Square and Getreidegasse, the latter is a quirky street with old-fashioned signs indicating what each store sells. With 125 hotels and guesthouses available on Booking.com, your stay in Salzburg is bound to be as pleasant as this city is pretty.

    Salzburg is just beautiful.

Salzburg is just beautiful. You only need 2-3 days to explore but it's well worth a visit. The Hohensalzburg Fortress is a must see and will fill up a morning; whilst there is a funicular up to it (the walk is very steep), we took the elevator to Winkler Terrace and then walked along a clifftop walk to the fortress and were rewarded with the most spectacular views on the other side of the cliff. The Mirabelle Palace Gardens are also very scenic (famous as a filming location in the Sound of Music) and the view across the gardens to the fortress is spectacular.

Visited the Eagle's Nest, the Salt mines. Attended a concert. The old city is fantastic for strolling and shopping. The Fortress, St Peter's restaurant, the oldest restaurant in the world, and it has an excellent menu. Getting around is easy. Uber, Taxi, bus.

Salzburg is lovely with the mountains visible from almost every part of the city. It's a walkers paradise and for longer distances public transportation is more than adequate. The bus connections are on point. Most of them driving to or past city attractions. Also, public transport is very affordable as it should be in every major city. Salzburg food scène is not subject to mindless consumption like other major cities which is actually a welcome breath of fresh air. On a major holiday, we were shocked to find out that most restaurants were closed. However there are enough places to eat with good and friendly staff, tasty food and especially, well priced for good portions. So yes Salzburg is lovely to visite.

We stayed a week, which would probably be too long for the average visitor, but we wanted a slow pace and to do things beyond the city. Must-do sights: Residenz (which affords a view into the cathedral), Mozart birth house, Mirabell gardens, Hellbrunn (a short bus ride). The Hohensalzburg fortress too, though the views are its best feature, interior a bit ho-hum. Best places we ate at: for veggie fare, Heart of Joy and for fabulous Austrian fare, Alte Fuchs and Johanneskellar (all of these in 'new town' area). In general, just wandering around is nice. Oh, and don't forget all the Sound of Music stuff (the four hour tour was very good).

Salzburg is a beautiful city, with great facilities and friendly people. There is plenty to do, the Fortress (Catle) is interesting and the exhibits have changed since the last time we visited. Museum of Modern Art may interest you. Multiple museums to visit. If you’re into the Sound of Music, or Mozart there is much to see. Good location to visit other places like the Salzkammergut. Many reasonable food and drink places in the city - Sternbräu is one of our favourites - and a visit to the Stiegl brewery is worth a thought. Salzburg card worth considering - gives you free public transport and free entry to many tourist sites. 3 day card 46 euros, we easily got 100 euros value and could have had more if we had pushed it.

The receptionist was very very kind and friendly, the room was nice, the building is lovely with an old facade very typical. We didn't book with breakfast, but we found restaurants and supermarket really close. The Hotel is a little bit "far" from the city centre, but walking there is just 25 min, nice starting walk to discover Salzburg Plus+ there is a bus directly from the airport and leave you there in just 20 min or so. This is an amazing hotel. The view from my room was great. I could see the Fortress sitting beautifully over the old town... The only thing that beat that there was the view from the rooftop! It was spectacular. They upgraded my room for me for free, they charged my phone when my charger stopped working. They looked up all the info for my train tickets for me. If I am ever lucky enough to visit Salzburg again, I would definitely stay here...

Every single member of the hotel staff was accomodating, friendly, and helpful in every way. Perfect from check in to check out and everything in between. The location was perfect for exploring the old town. A big difference is the way the property responded immediately and positively to concerns messaged to them upon booking and prior to arrival. The price was exactly what I had planned. When I was picking between the hotel restaurant Auerhahn and some well known hotels for similar prices, I wanted fine dining close at hand along with helping a smaller business. This is purely family owned and you will meet the same 2-5 people that handle everything each and every day. One more note on the food - it was some of the better I've had in Austria, not only Salzburg.

It’s a nice little place, very clean. We had 2 single rooms for my granddaughter and me. No breakfast, but didn’t expect it. It’s at the end of the street, turning the car around is a bit of work. We were looking for a simple inexpensive base for exploring Salzburg and the surrounding area, not a destination hotel with lots of services, it was just what we needed. Laundry service is available for 8 euro a load.

Super friendly staff at the reception desk / breakfast. The facilities aren't modern but convey an "old Austrian style" that matches the flair of Salzburg perfectly. The breakfast was great for the size of the hotel but - of course - cannot compare to big chains with hundreds of beds. The hotel is very close to the station and about a 20min walk from the old town. We were able to walk everywhere.
