Lake Views from Every Angle
On a narrow peninsula protruding into Lake Garda, Sirmione is a wonderful town famed for its multi-turreted castle, Roman remains and hot springs.
The 13th-century lakeside castle makes quite an impressive sight as you cross its drawbridge to enter the old town beyond. From its walls there are lovely views of red-roofed buildings towards the trees hiding the ruins of a huge villa that belonged to 1st-century BC Roman poet Catullus. Part of the complex included baths featuring the thermal waters, and the town still has a spa today on the opposite side of the promontory.
Nearby is the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore with its 15th-century frescoes, and the surrounding narrow, cobbled streets are home to stone buildings and several Sirmione hotels on Lake Garda. The majority of hotels are mid-range, but there are still a few 4 and 5-star hotels in Sirmione to choose from.
Booking.com also has lots of accommodations by the lake in the newer part of town, and its Lugana Vecchia area has a UNESCO World Heritage-listed prehistoric site.
To the west of Sirmione is the lakefront town of Desenzano del Garda, while to the east is Peschiera del Garda, close to the Gardaland and Canevaworld theme parks. The nearest airport is Verona Catullo Airport to the southeast.

Absolutely stunning town centre with the beautiful castle...
Absolutely stunning town centre with the beautiful castle and quaint buildings sprawling with bougainvillea....lots of restaurants and gelato places to choose from. That being said, there doesn't seem to be much else there and once you've looked around the castle and had something to eat/drink and had a wander, it's enough. We spent 2 days there and that was more than plenty. If you combine it with Lake Garda and do a day trip there (or maybe overnight), it would be enough and plenty of people were doing just that and catching the ferry over for the day. Sirmione was a fantastic base for our holiday Where we stayed, near the castle has a great selection of restaurant and bars, and not overly expensive considering the location We had dinner at many of the local restaurants, including Barracuda and Scalingeri Street Food We visited Jamaica beach, which was a great day out! Lovely access to the lake, a nice little bar and access to some food It’s is very busy throughout the day however we used the ferry to travel to other places at times, and the options for travel was vast. Sirmione is truly beautiful but probably busier than we would have liked but that is just our preference. The evenings in the town get really busy and always best to try and book a table at a restaurant (never nice to queue) so your not waiting to long. It's extremely easy to get around. We expected the old town to be crowded but it was manageable (in early July). There was a shuttle bus (not run by the hotel) but which picked up and dropped outside. It is better to stay outside Sirmione as it can get very crowded. We were able to walk into Sirmione easily and eat there and walk back to our hotel.
