The Elopura Hotel located on the East Coast of Sabah which also known as “Land below the Wind”. Elopura name itself was the first name of Sandakan when it was found by William B Prier back in 1879.

I just stayed one night but met my needs and was nice location.
Perched on top of a hill, this resort is surrounded by the tropical rainforests of Borneo.

Best we could find in Sandakan and it was a nice place to relax after our jungle trip. Everything was ok but we felt it had the potential to be so much better.

Important and interesting history related to the British...
Important and interesting history related to the British influence for town development; especially the story that unfolded and is memorialized about the war years and the sad fate of many Aust & Brit POW's and the of local Sabah supporters and underground.
The history of extensive logging and use of timber was of professional interest to me as a forester.
The brutal destruction of the timber buildings by the Japanese military was bad - and the gradual rebuild over following 10 -20 years is remarkable. Its notablel that the central city is declining due to lack of regular upgrade and maintenance, and influx of certain migrant groups and housing needs. Also notable that commercial business and new shops have expanded out into modernized precincts away from town centre. Proximity to Sepolik rainforest reserve and other wildlife conservation parks is great for travellers to eastern Sabah. Local malaysian people are friendly and easy to relat to in the main.

Our family went to Sandakan to do a 3D2N river experience.
Our family went to Sandakan to do a 3D2N river experience. We saw 4 of the big 5 Kinbatangan River has to offer - only the pygmy elephant remaining elusive. We booked our river experience through Seekie Sophie. This turned out to be amazing. The accommodation was great. Our family stayed in a 6-bed dorm with two other foreign girls. Following this we visited the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. This is a MUST DO! if you love wildlife. The Sun Bear Conservation Centre is across the road and is convenient to visit. Nice to walk through the jungle on the boardwalk but not an essential activity to do. It's more zoo-like and not my cup of tea really. If you only want to do these two activities, it is better to stay in Sepilok itself.
I wish I had planned my trip better as I would have liked to have visited Turtle Islands National Park - you need to travel out there, stay a night and come back the following morning. I also would have liked to have visited Gomantong Caves. Both of these places were highly recommended by other travellers who had visited them.
Sandakan is fairly central to all these places and Grab is a good way to get around. Be prepared for rough roads and crazy drivers on them. Adds to the adventure! Going to Sandakan is a bit like acting in your own Indiana Jones movie . . .
If, like us, you take your children with you and you love Star Wars... check out The Skywalker Lounge at the Elopura hotel. The food is good with plenty of options, but it is the Star Wars figurines that are the coolest thing about this place.

Loved my stay in Sandakan, my accommodation was ideal for me and the location was perfect. There was so much more to explore but flight constraints limited my time there! Enjoyed some great seafood at the nearby restaurant on the water (Waterfront Seafood Restaurant), easy access to Sepilok for seeing orangutangs and sun bears. Pity my footwear was not suitable for visiting the RDC - note, to wear closed shoes and take mosquito repellant. And wish I could have done a trip to see the turtles. Use Grab taxis to get around. I would love to go back!!

Sandakan has a fascinating history, particularly in regard to WW2 - check out the POW Death Marches from Sandakan to Ranau and the bravery of Agnes Keith and her husband. Local people of all ethnicities, took enormous risks to help escaped POW's and to support those opposed to the Japanese invasion.
Sim Sim is a 15 minute Grab drive away and we ate at Sim Sim 90 twice - the food and service was excellent. Cold beer is sold and there's a cooling breeze in the evenings.
Sandakan is not a beautiful city these days but we found it interesting and well worth a visit. It is an excellent gateway to tours up the Kingabatangan River. Sepilok is hotter, and without a market or supermarket, but leafier and more relaxing.

The place is dirty, strong bad smell all over the area.
The place is dirty, strong bad smell all over the area. The only think that made our stay up was the visit at Sandakan Rainforest Park, though we didn't see that much animals there. We saw loads of pitcher plants

A very run down, untidy and litter strewn town.
A very run down, untidy and litter strewn town. Residents do not take pride in their town and throw litter anywhere and everywhere, much of it in the harbour - absolutely disgusting, in such a beautiful country. Also lots of homelessness and too many beggars, including very young children, it’s almost constant. not a town to stay in for any longer than is necessary .
Lots of good places to eat though.

We stayed 5 nights here in family, the apartement is big enough and recent. There is also a drinking water machine (hot and cold)
There is a parking if you rent a car.
It's at a walking distance (700m) from Elopura recreation park which is a walk surrounding Sandakan with a stunning view (around 2km to make the loop).
Nice view from the balcony (trees and mountain).
location good. you should invest and improve it and charge more because it has such a glamorous past and great location - think of it as the Raffles of Sandakan. people will definitely pay more if you improve it. sandakan has a dearth of nice hotels! but it has so much history and nature assets going for it.
Apart from a young gentleman handing us the key, our contact was through Whattsapp which was ok. The lady booked a river cruise for us at the last moment, and it was outstanding. For a budget hotel, it was a good deal and I would recommend it. Location was good too.
5-stars apartment! I would like to highly recommend it if you want to spend nice time in Sandakan, Borneo. For me it was a pleasure to spend here couple of days and definitely it was my best accommodation during 3-weeks trip in Sabah, Borneo.
