If you’re looking for somewhere on Vancouver Island to relax, refresh, and renew your spirit, this is the place. Mel is an outstanding host who truly loves to welcome guests to her pride and joy, a beautifully restored and appointed Edwardian home that offers quiet comfort and a peaceful setting. I enjoyed a spacious room with large comfortable bed and its own bathroom, overlooking the garden. The entire house is furnished and decorated with antiques and are a delight to view - and most have an interesting story behind them. Mel cooks breakfast from scratch using local products when available, and will offer different types of hand crafted coffees to try and overall get your day off to a fantastic start. You can explore the local area, or stay in and relax in the parlour or the wrap around veranda with lots of cozy seating…you can even take a blanket to ward off the evening chill. And yes, there are plenty of hummingbirds to watch! The location provides easy access to the Ladysmith, Nanaimo, and Cedar area, and the Cowichan valley in general. The whole area is worth exploring for its natural beauty and local farms, markets and artisans. Uber hasn’t quite found its way here yet, though it’s supposed to start some time in 2025, so until then you will get the most of your visit by having your own car. That also allows you visit the nearby communities for other meals, and Mel can give you some great tips and recommendations. I look forward to returning to enjoy the comfort and hospitality of Hummingbird Gardens, and hope others love it as much as I did.

I have always liked Ladysmith and now we have friends living there it's a perfect excuse to visit. Transfer Beach is wonderful for all ages. We happened upon a wonderful authentic English pub called the Crow & Gate which is quite lovely with great food and friendly staff. A wonderful place to visit and explore with trails, waterfalls, antique and other shops along with a bakery that makes the most amazing cinnamon buns.

Nice to have a breakfast in the morning but I found the omelet and sausage bland. The waffles were fun. The room was great. We booked two rooms so our family could join us. Wish we could have had adjoining rooms but one wasn't available.

It is a small island with limited facilities, so go prepared. Visiting the Malaspina Galleries rock formation is a must see, close to the ferry terminal. Driving around the island is easy, although there are some unpaved roads that cross the centre.

Beautiful, artsy, laid back town with some great dining options. We enjoyed the Watermill Park and the Owls Nest Cafe. We were not expecting to find a Christmas Store but this was one of the best supplied, all things Christmas that you will find. We did a 3 km easy hike around Chemainus Lake Trail, also know as Weddle Lake Trail. Very beautiful and easy to walk. Chaemainus is located for easy day trips to Campbell River or Comox.

We love Ladysmith.

We love Ladysmith. It has a certain ambiance that we warm to. Of course we join the many others who love the Old Town Bakery. You need a car to really get around Ladysmith and environs. There isn't anything we would avoid.

This wasn't our first trip to Nanaimo so we did know our way around most of the city and beyond, but it is always a great place to be. We love the well planned Harbour walkways, many events in the parks, the beach trails. Our favourite beach walks are Piper's Lagoon and Neck Point. There are many good music venues, restaurants, scenic drives and walks. We easily found side roads that were basically parallel to the highway to get to and from downtown. Nanaimo has has a LOT to offer any visitor of any age! Can't wait to return!

A charming island with few conveniences.

A charming island with few conveniences. The major coffee shop looks warm and welcoming but the coffee--my cappuccino, at least--seemed to be missing actual coffee. Or else it was just weak? Just water and foam? Unfortunately we are used to more luxury and conveniences so its charms were largely lost on us.

We particularly value the feeling of Community that Chemainus exudes. This is a place that welcomes it's visitors with open arms. People here are at peace and are very helpful and accommodating. Chemainus is a beautiful town to walk around in and admire and it is more than simply charming. Free art and music surround you, and the merchants you speak to are only too happy chat with you and to make your visit a pleasant one. Parking in town is readily available and comes at no charge! A scrumptious and reasonably priced menu awaits you at Bonnie Martin's Restaurant and so many more treats you'll find in the many other stores and venues. The people in this town can't do enough for you and the things to do are endless. Enjoy Chemainus. We loved it so much, we moved here!

Our stay was between the town of Nanaimo and Ladysmith.

Our stay was between the town of Nanaimo and Ladysmith. The lodge did not have a cafe, so we had to drive 11 km to get supper. I know the town of Ladysmith from past experience and it is a beautiful little town with lots of shops and restaurants. Great place to visit.

The Inner Harbor was beautiful.

The Inner Harbor was beautiful. The Snowbirds did a show when I was there. The harbor was lively and fun. The hiking in the area was awesome. Nanaimo is easy to navigate with a car. Great halfway stop between Victoria and Tofino.
