Aalter isn't much to look at but the main square has a few nice, typical Belgian restaurant/cafés where you can enjoy a nice steak or some mussels along with a Jupiler beer. It's right next to the main motorway between Calais and Brussels, about halfway between Bruges and Gent so ideal for a stopover.
We were going from Wales to Berlin and needed an overnight stay, somewhere we could get a good sleep and a nice breakfast in the midst of all the driving. About 75 mins from Channel tunnel so one feels one has made inroads on the trek across Europe before stopping for the night. Quiet town, nice restaurant in the square, the train to Bruges (15 mins) offers a chance to see a little bit of the city while passing through.
A very small town, easy driving distance from Ghent and Bruges. The market square has a few restaurants, one of which ( the green bean translated ?) serves wonderful food. Worth a visit just for afternoon tea or supper.
We used Aalter as a base to visit friends in Eeklo, Maldegem and Lovendegem., where accomodation prices seem to be much higher. Handy for the coast and Bruges and Gent also. A few nice bars which also do food.
You really need a car to get around. The apartment wasin the middle of nowhere. the restaurant was busy at night though we didnt try it ourselves. the nearest supermarket we found was the other side of Aalter it was an Aldi, so I would think you could get most of your supplies from there.
I enjoyed the tranquillity and privacy, as well as the quality of the room and its furnishings. To make my stay even better, there could have been instructions of how to use the heater, the provision of a wine glass and a small saucepan. When working at the table a table lamp or a directed wall light would have improved things. Not everyone has GPS in their car. Better directions would have helped.
