It was our first time in Sofia, just a stop-over at night and we managed to visit it for a few hours next day before going back home. The city center is very nice, has nice parks and green areas, nice cafes & places to eat. We really liked the old roman ruins in the center and how they are integrated with the other buildings above. Sofia surprised me with its mix of history, culture, and relaxed charm. Walking through the city, I loved how ancient Roman ruins, Orthodox churches, and Soviet-era landmarks stand side by side with modern cafés and lively streets. The highlight of the city center is the golden-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, but I was equally impressed by the energy of Vitosha Boulevard and the peaceful atmosphere of Borisova Gradina Park. The Free Sofia Tour gave a great introduction to the city’s past and present, while trips to Boyana Church and the Rila Monastery revealed Bulgaria’s deep cultural heritage. Sofia is affordable, safe, and English is widely understood in the central areas, which makes exploring easy. Public transport, especially the metro, is convenient and budget-friendly. I lived in Sofia for 8 years. The place is vibrant. It has many interesting restaurants and bars to suit various tastes. It has lots of culture - leftovers from the communist regime and ancient Roman empire. It has a pedestrian street - Vitosha street, a huge green park - Borisova gradina (Boris' Garden) and many small, but crafty streets in the center. Lots of malls too if you are into shopping. In July and August a lot of the population are out of town...
In July and August a lot of the population are out of town so there are wide open spaces and not many people. The buildings are fabulous and the cafes, shops and supermarkets have a great variety of food. There are tours you can take, to the north, south and east. I went to the Belogradchik rocks and cave near the Romanian border, and also to the wine town of Melnik and the Rila monastery near the Greek border. On both tours there were only 5 tourists and the driver/tour guide. I also took public busses to the nearby ski resorts, and walked in the mountains above the city. people were really helpful and it was good that I can read cyrillic, I recommend learning that before visiting, although many people do speak english, which is amazing!
