Over 100 years old, The Alpenhof is a family-run guest house offering budget accommodations and basic facilities in the scenic village of Stechelberg in the Bernese Oberland. Peaceful location! Surrounded by waterfalls at the end of the valley! Comfortable beds. Rooms with a view. Many mountain hikes begin here. Welcoming atmosphere! Excellent hosts! From the moment you arrive you are treated like an old friend and made to feel right at home! Will stay again!
In the car-free resort of Mürren in the Bernese Oberland, the chalet-style Hotel Alpenruh offers wonderful views of the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau mountains. Alpenruh really helped us to enjoy our vacation in the mountains. It has an excellent location, the breakfast was exceptional, the staff were all very friendly. I enjoyed that they offer dinner every night (but of course you don't have to eat there if you want to explore elsewhere). Our dog was welcomed and we felt at home.
The most beautiful and picturesque place I have ever been to. Hopped off the gondola and my jaw dropped. This place is tiny with not a whole lot going on but just a quick sunset stroll through the village will have you thinking you’ve reached heaven.
Gimmelwald is lovely - it's quiet and beautiful. I caught it between rainy spells, unfortunately, but that just gave the air a particularly fresh quality. There's a viewpoint part way up the main road in the village, and if you stand there and close your eyes, you can hear the waterfalls from across the valleys. It's a great location if you want to explore some of the mountain walks - even if you just fancy walking up to Murren, or down to Trummelbach falls, or exploring the mountain generally. There are plenty of paths in the area, and the guesthouse where I stayed gave me a card for use in Murren at places like the pool, as well as maps of the area. The village has an "honesty shop" for touristy items, and various other places which operate on an honesty basis, where you can buy local farm goods.
Esther's Guesthouse was such an amazing place to stay. This is totally off the beaten path. There are no cars in the town of Gimmelwald. The hosts were amazing. They gave us the ability to order homemade bread, did our laundry for us and recommended things to do! The place was super clean! They have a shared kitchen which had all the equipment needed to prepare meals. We were able to make dinner each night for our family of six. The location was so beautiful, with views of the Swiss Alps! We walked through the small town where local farmers sell fresh milk, cheese & sausages, all on the honor system! Literally, you just leave the money and take what you need! My kids found this amazing! I would highly recommend staying here if you want to get away from the busier towns! I will definitely plan to come back and stay!
Gimmelwald is No 1 on the list of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland. I recommend a stay of 2 nights here. The serenity, tranquility & breathtaking beauty are stuff that dreams are made of.
This is a very small town with few vehicles except farming ones. It is very walkable but there are always steep inclines or stairs. In mid April there are many farmers that do not have their cows or sheep outside and some are away for this "in between" time for ski season and summer hiking season. Wild chamois are sometime around!
Two nights was about right for me in Gimmelwald, considering the weather... More time and I would have explored a little more. Hiked over to Murren, etc. However, I do wish I had spent more time in the Lautrabrunnen Valley proper, of course nearly impossible to pull over for a photo. It was spectacular. Luxuriantly green U-shaped valley with impressive vertical walls. And I unfortunately didn't have a chance to explore around Interlaken either, but raced to my departing plane in Zurich instead. Oh and there are a couple small self-serve stores in Gimmelwald.
We had a perfect stay at Pension Gimmelwald. Sabine, David and the kids were great hosts, and are very international (perfect for us, with limited German skills :)). They gave us fantastic recommendations for hikes in the area, we tasted the locally brewed Black Monk beer, had a fantastic cheese fondue, and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings. Basically the whole village was very welcoming . Highly recommended to stay here!
The cosiness of the appartment and our host was a very helpful and friendly person. I’m sorry I couldn’t remember his name. Gimmelwald is a peaceful and small village on the way to Murren. Its worth spending a few nights.
