A charming town, with good historical sites. The Neolithic structures are excellent -- and free. The two close to town are fascinating, but this is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and one would really hope for much more information. A brief paragraph (and wording on a bust in a square in town) credits the work of Michael Hoskin for contributing to the awarding of UNESCO status, but you need to do a lot of work onlone to find out more about the archaeoastronomy. A museum is being constructed, and it is tto be hoped that it will provide more info in future. Do not miss the Tholos (out of town, but signposted off a roundabout on the road towards the A45. The central fortress is well worth a visit. Also a beautifully proportioned and simple church. The Park Torcal, about 20 mins away, provides good walks. We were there in late January, and temperatures were fine. I imagine that in the summer the rewards are smaller.
Town was 9th largest in Spain’s Golden Age, but mainly rebuilt other than Alcazaba, churches and a few Aristocratic houses. Main town sites can be seen in one day, get schedule of church openings from tourist office ( many just open weekends). Local excursions recommended to Torcal for views and short hike, Archidona town, further afield to El Chorro with spectacular bookable “Camino del Rey” balcony/gorge walk a must; Ronda and Granada doable in a day; take AVE train 45 min to ancient Cordoba, or other direction to cosmopolitan Malaga. Restaurants serve mainly local food of chicken and pork, few vegetables, local fruits only, local red wines recommended! Narrow streets best for walking, one way system difficult to navigate for cars, From Vistas you can walk everywhere in town.
El torcal and Dolmen were great place must see. Caminito del Rey also must see. Old town has good tourist places and nice view on the hill ,but not easy to drive in old town area. because roads are narrow and too many oneways.
Wish I'd stayed longer. Alcazaba is worth a visit but do it in the morning before the heat and humidity take over. So many wonderful historical sites in Antequerra. Caminito del Rey is close by. If you're not afraid of heights it's a must-do.
There is a lot of things to do in the city and surroundings. You have a choice between historical sightseeing or nature escapade. The city center is really wonderful and worth of visit. We recommend also a trip to El Torcal and Caminito del Rey for a walk. You can also practice a birdwatching in Laguna de Fuente de Piedra. There is a choice of nice restaurants in the city center, the food is good at a very reasonable prices.
So much to see in and around Antequera, The Dolmans were very good. So many beautiful churches. Lovely squares with bars and cafes. Fabulous Bull ring. Best to walk around and take in the beautiful buildings. The drive to the Torcal was spectacular.
Antequera
The modern apartment is in a monumental building with an absolutely gorgeous and impressive stairway. Centrally located, the old town and main street is just a few steps away. We were greeted by a very friendly and helpful hostess who had a good sense of humor and was at our disposal anytime we needed anything. Be sure to visit the La Perla factory just behind the building (you can see it from the living room / bedroom window) to buy some of Antequera’s world famous Xmas biscuits, mantecados and alfajores.
The clerk was very helpful in helping me get a parking space near the hotel (when his shift ended I took HIS space). That saved me lots of time and stress as I had to leave quite early to catch a flight. There is a free parking area about 200 meters downhill from the hotel, by the way. I recommend pulling up to the hotel, offload your bags, leave them at reception and then park....the receptionist can direct you to where the parking is.
Old fashioned Spanish building with wonderful courtyards both internally and outside. Boutique hotel with really top quality restaurant and bar in traditional Spanish bodega style. We had our dinner in the restaurant courtyard with hanging plants and beautiful lighting. Didn’t get to use the pool facilities but it would be great in the summer months.
Location was spot on. Hotel has a lovely foyer area. Staff were very helpful. There is a lift to all floors. Room had a fridge and a safe. Air con was good. Please note there is a huge amount of free parking less than a 10 min walk from the hotel so drop your bags and go park. Good bar/restaurant next door.
Nice location, balcony with a view to a nearby old church. Friendly staff. Possibility to park a car at the closed parking 100 metres from the hotel. There's a restaurant downstairs which is convenient for a breakfast. Antequera is a city worth visiting.
Staff were fantastic and very courteous. Beautiful putside terraces area and the rooms were very clean. Great power shower,, deep bath.and lovely big bathtowels. Food was good quality and reasonable price for 4 star hotel.
A really great hotel. Staff friendly and helpful. Room (a junior suite) was excellent and far exceeded our expectations - very large and comfortable, with a great bathroom which included a double bath/jauzzi!
I received a good price for a big room in this hotel. Great city, great atmosphere and if I will return to Antequera, this will be the first choice of a hotel!
Great 3 star hotel in city center, very clean, very comfortable beds. They have a beautiful patio, smoking zone, breakfast is good ,free parking in 250 meters
Everything about Fuente del Sol is perfect. We come back everytime we are in Spain and it is always incredible - the views, food, staff, rooms - everything!
