Bonifaccio is a beautiful ancient fortified town built on a cliff with a harbour very much protected from the open sea. The town is wonderful to explore, including the citadel on the very top. It’s a good walk up and in the heat less fit people might find it rather too much. Once at the top you can descend on a flight of stairs back under the cliffs which is very steep and has possibly 200 steps - again if you’re not fit and don’t have the right footwear, don’t do it. Up top, there are a number of restaurants in the Corsican style. Around the harbour there are many tourist shops, convenience stores including wonderful little family supermarket built underneath the rocks and some very nice looking but rather expensive restaurants. Bonfacio is lovely.
Bonfacio is lovely. The Old Town is perched on the cliffs and offers superb views across the sea to Sardinia. It is packed with lovely winding streets and little shops and restaurants offered a wide choice of food. Our fav restaurant in Old Town was Chez Julien and near the port, Chez Francis. We didn't have a car but still managed to get around - there's a bus service to Porto Vecchio and you can take the ferry to Sardinia, it only takes an hour. There are plenty of boat trips from companies dotted around the harbour. We were there off season, there are more bus routes available during the main summer season. Bonifacio is truly breathtaking — perched dramatically on limestone cliffs, with views that look like something out of a dream. The old town is charming and full of character, with narrow cobbled streets, historic buildings, and a unique blend of French and Mediterranean atmosphere. The harbor is lively and elegant, full of yachts, restaurants, and a laid-back holiday vibe, while the upper town offers stunning panoramas and a rich sense of history. A couple of days here gives the time to explore the city and see the sights - the marina, the staircase, the bastion tour, walk the walls and do the hillside walk to the east of the city. Private parking opposite the hotel was huge bonus as all carparks in Bonifacio get full very early. Super friendly reception staff. Nice bar and restaurant right on the waters edge. Other reviews mention noise from the bar next door, this true. It didnt bother us for our one night stay, but it could easily be a problem especially in the high season as people dancing and signing in the street which is just below the bedroom window.
