Located in the Gran Sasso National Park, Le Pagliare Del Gran Sasso is a renovated stone building, set in the small town of Assergi. It offers rustic-style rooms with free Wi-Fi. The place was very nice and quiet, the room was super cosy and clean, equipped with an electric kettle to prepare tea and spend comfortable time there. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful, giving me a ride back to the bus station as I was there without a car.
This is essentially a review of Fonte Cerreto, as the hotel I stayed in is not in Assergi. Fonte Cerreto is very small, and is really just the base for exploring the Gran Sasso in the summer. It is probably also a good base for exploring the ski area in the winter. I ate in the hotel, but I think the trattoria a few hundred yards down the road would have provided better food.
You must understand what is around you . Upon arrival it isn’t clear . You need a car to move around . I suggest to bring some food along . The closet supermarket is 8 km away because the earthquake has destroyed the center . There are only two restaurants in the town . If you accept eating in the cozy kitchen you have no problems . There are pots and pans .
Assergi is a small but very charming village in the heart of Abruzzo. There are no stores located in it but the public transportation makes it possible to go to L'Aquila or to other nearby villages (Paganica, Camarda, etc.). The mountains are "hand-reached" from Assergi making it a very scenery place.
A this was a business trip in January I had no time to explore the area. And of course it was dark in the evening. There are a couple more restaurants in Assergi - I didn't try these. But they are a good walk down the hill further into the village. But the Giampi was ideal as it is a five minute drive to INFN. Next time I shall stay there again.
