Important Port of Saintly Significance
The Apulian capital Bari has been known for its port since Roman times. Nowadays there are 2 harbours: cruise ships and ferries to Greece and Croatia depart from the new port, while the old port shelters fishing vessels.
Between them is a seafront road bordering the real attraction – the old town. Narrow, cobbled streets lead under arches to hidden piazzas with pavement cafes. Many are on adjoining Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese, where the old Roman road is exposed.
The imposing 12th-century Norman-Swabian Castle guards the west of the historic centre, and the simple Cathedral of San Sabino is from the same period. Equally understated is the Basilica of St Nicholas, housing relics of the saint. Pope John Paul II once prayed there, which may have given rise to Bari Airport’s name: Karol Wojtyła Airport.
Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the meeting point of the old town and the Murat district, built under orders of Napoleon’s brother-in-law. Facing each other across this street are the colourful façades of the municipal office and Piccinni Theatre, though most prestigious is the Petruzzelli Theatre opera house.
Booking.com’s Bari accommodation includes luxury hotels by the Fiera del Levante, cheap city centre apartments, and B&Bs near the train station. For families, the slides and swimming pools of Bari Acquapark make a great day out.

We have been to Bari several times.
We have been to Bari several times. It is a great city - the old town is beautiful with its small streets and it is amazing to walk around there. The fresh fruit shops are great and the most wonderful - in terms of food - is Santa Rita - for the best focacchia in Italy! St. Nicholas Basilica is wonderful and peaceful and also a stroll along the seaside is fantastic with a sun setting on the day. We have made some local friends and went for a drink - wonderful people! The image from the past, that Bari is a dirty and even dangerous city (like Naples) is no longer true. Bari has a beautiful old town and excellent infrastructure for tourists. You can easily explore the surrounding area without a car by using the regional trains – tickets are very affordable. We used Bari as a base to visit other places in Puglia. Bari itself is very pleasant. It's easy to get around and the drive along the beach front is very nice. Not your typical choice for a seaside location. Bari is split into two; one side of the train tracks and the other. The old town is beautiful, interesting and vibrant, this flows into the modern town, which is quite interesting and has a lot of cafes and shops, but not as pretty as the old town. Then there is the other side of the tracks, which has little to recommend it. Not a lot of greenery, cafes or activity, just lots of condominiums and the prison.Guest review byEva
