A Shakespearean Fairytale
A darling of Shakespeare, beautiful Verona is the literary home of Romeo and Juliet. The medieval families of Montague and Capulet immortalized in the tragic play did actually exist and some buildings relating to the Montagues are still present.
Sorry to disappoint, but the place purporting to have been Juliet's house in Verona was not actually where she lived. However, it’s still worth suspending reality for a while and stepping out onto the balcony to see if Romeo turns up.
Another of the must-see Verona sights is the Arena, a largely intact Roman amphitheater which is now the spectacular setting for outdoor summer operas. Smaller Roman relics include the stone bridge that crosses the river by the Roman theater whose remains are partly beneath a house.
The city’s narrow streets house many cafes and restaurants which have cheaper fare than the touristy ones by the Arena, although admittedly the views are less impressive. Life in Verona is laid back and elegant, so expect to see some well-heeled Italians on a post-dinner passeggiata.
Verona Airport is a little out of town, so you’ll need to take a bus to get to your Verona hotel, apartment or B&B. Book with Booking.com for the best choice.

First time in Verona found it to be very beautiful Italian pictures city with many things to do and a lot historical sites. Giulietta's house for the ladies, see football games of HELLAS VERONA, visit The Arena di Verona is an impressive. See performances, opera and ballet in Arena and The Teatro Romano. Both were stunning. Walks by the river, visit churches and the museums. Also archaeological sites across the city are well presented and give a clear sense of Verona’s Roman heritage. We love Verona.
We love Verona. Even in the height of summer it was not too crowded and was no hotter than it was when we were there in June a couple of years ago. Easy to walk around. Our visit this time was to attend the Opera at the Roman Arena. You can't go past the venue for a great experience, but the opera was disappointing (Aida, with some unusual costume and choreography choices). For a great view, catch the funicular up the hill, go to the cafe for a drink and then walk down. To manage the heat and the crowds, go out early in the morning and then have a siesta. Parking was excellent, we booked too late to get the parking of the hotels but literally a five minute walk down the road and with two big suitcases was the best parking we have had in Italy and we had a big car.
