Shizuoka is a hidden gem. You can stay here and get to many sightseeing destinations by rail (day trips) and come back to the relaxation of more laidback location. Locals are very pleasant and friendly, not so jaded by the over tourism of Kyoto and Osaka. Shizuoka's shinkanesen train station is packed full of interesting shops and restaurants. We absolutely loved browsing as we waited for our train. Our visit in Shizuoka was much too short. I would have like to walk through the park (Sumpu) Walk through the city and explore more of the department stores. We got to see a local tea farm but it would have been great to visit more. We hated it. We felt unsafe, boxed in. My friend is fluent in Japanese but even she was having trouble making the staff understand even small things. It’s a love hotel. Very disturbing. Sextoy magasine, prostitute magasine, locked doors that only open when you call and ask the staff to open the doors. Staff that didn’t understand. From a touristic perspective Shizuoka was just perfect for travelers who look for a more relaxing location. It was not full of tourists like you would expect seeing in Tokyo. But this also means that not everything is written or explained in english.
