Everything. It was close to the old historic town, many restaurants within a 10 min walk or less away. Rooms were exceptional, also very clean and the bed sizes were way bigger than expected. I would definitely stay there again. 10/10 experience.

My husband and I spent 4 full days and 5 nights in Takayama and that was the perfect length for us. First day walked the old district, Second day went to Shirakawa-go, Suganuma and Ainokura village. Third day went to Sato Open Air Museum and the Hikaru Museum and last day walked the town some more. Great place to visit.

Everything we hoped to see was in easy walking or public transport distance. The markets were full of variety and enabled us to purchase gifts for family. There were some fantastic restaurants to choose from.

We came to Takayama to visit Gokayama and Shirawakago.
We came to Takayama to visit Gokayama and Shirawakago. Joined the tour Niho guided tour bus which brought us to the two UNESCO heritage sites. I recommend the tour bus because it is not easy to travel to Gokayama on your own by public transport. The guide provides lots of good information to maximise the visit. Takayama is small town that is charming but the old town can be quite crowded with visitors. Do try the Hida beef which is served in many ways in Takayama.

Beautiful small town in the mountains.
Beautiful small town in the mountains. Taking the train there was very scenic in autumn. Lots to do in the surrounding area. We rented a car at the Toyota facility by the train station. Was an adventure, with many tunnels to drive through lol!

We took the bus from Matsumoto to Takayama and this is a stunning journey- it is beautiful with the fall colours. We loved the city and how friendly everyone is, the preservation of the city is a credit to its inhabitants and our visit to the Hida village was a wonderful experience.

Tons to do in this area from the river front outdoor market and wonderful shopping on the side streets to unique villages and mountain hikes. I recommend renting a car (Toyota Rent-a-car in Takayama Station) and driving one hour to the shuttle that takes you in Kamikochi (The Yosemite of Japan) and then anther day to the Rope Course (Gondola). I think you need 5-6 days to get it all in.

The staff was very polite and helpful.
The room was very clean and confortable. Wasn't big, but Japan's hotel rooms very rarely are.
The location was perfect - less than 5 minutes from the train station and bus terminal. And less than 10 from Takayama's historical center.
During the time we were there they offered a happy our on early evenings - 1 drink per guest + curry and rice. Which was a very happy surprise for us!
They also have public baths (onsen).
one of our favourite stays during our month in Japan with a family of 5.
Everyone had a real and comfortable bed (often we have to share with a kid or someone sleeps on a sofa), it was light and clean.
Nice bathroom and I love having a washing machine in the room.
Close to the station and the old town was 10-15 minutes walk from were we stayed.
I recommend visiting the onsen at the neighbouring hotel Takayama Green Hotel.
Special place that is part boutique hotel, part ryokan. Great value and 5 star service. We loved the traditional tatami floors, comfortable futon, traditional robes to wear around the property and the impressive Japanese breakfast.
Can book a soak in private spa after a day of sightseeing. Can’t go wrong.
A very authentic experience. You will find yourself in a traditional house with great shared spaces and most welcoming people. And for the price per night its deffinitely the best hotel we have stayed in Japan. (And we stayed also in some quite pricey Ryokans )
It is a very nice Ryokan just in the hearth of Takayama. Super specious for the Japanese standards.
The host was very friendly and helpful.
There is a shared kitchen and a small, but very beautiful garden.
