We actually stayed in Kabalana which is just 25 min walk or 5 min tuk tuk drive from Ahangama. It was the right decision as Ahangama was twice as busy and Kabalana beach was way better. There are some weekly parties in town and a lot of solo travellers which can be met on social hostels, all around the town and at the beach. Definitely a quieter side of Sri Lanka, though its picking up and the nice part is if you have transport you can go visit the other beaches which are all in the same line and about 20-30 minutes distance within each other. There's a lot to do in terms if shopping some knick knacks, enjoying the food and some drinks as well. Great place for expats working remotely, the city has a huge western influence with all the beach bars and shacks, it is not so much authentic, but if you want comfort it's a good place to start with. We would high recommend the company “BOAT SAFARI IN KOGGALA” as a fab & knowledgeable company to do a boat trip around Koggala lake. They were so knowledgeable about plants, wildlife and the islands. The host family is incredibly nice and helpful. They helped us get a scooter and treated us with coffee and sweets! Location is perfect, two minute ride to the beach and centrally located between Galle and Mirissa. The room is next to a school which you can hear in the morning. But with ear plugs it’s no bother.
