We actually stayed in Kabalana which is just 25 min walk or 5 min tuk tuk drive from Ahangama. It was the right decision as Ahangama was twice as busy and Kabalana beach was way better. Ahangama is great for surfing, restaurants and social life! There are some weekly parties in town and a lot of solo travellers which can be met on social hostels, all around the town and at the beach. Definitely a quieter side of Sri Lanka, though its picking up and the nice part is if you have transport you can go visit the other beaches which are all in the same line and about 20-30 minutes distance within each other. There's a lot to do in terms if shopping some knick knacks, enjoying the food and some drinks as well. Great place for expats working remotely, the city has a huge western influence with all the beach bars and shacks, it is not so much authentic, but if you want comfort it's a good place to start with. We would high recommend the company “BOAT SAFARI IN KOGGALA” as a fab & knowledgeable company to do a boat trip around Koggala lake. They were so knowledgeable about plants, wildlife and the islands. They are brothers that run their business together, hotel and then the restaurant opposite the rooms. We were lucky enough to try the food, all of which was local, Sri Lankan cuisine and was really delicious. The location was perfect, just a couple of minutes walking and you’re at the beachfront of Midigama.
