True Arctic experience; it was Spring but still snowy and cold. Atmospheric town - not many tourists around in shoulder season. Good public transport. Cablecar is a must. We would have liked the opportunity to visit more surrounding sites. We boarded a Havila ship for a Kystruten cruise at Tromso - that was exceptional and very highly recommended.
Beautiful place! The people are friendly, the parks and streets are beautiful. I highly recommend renting a car - we did through Hertz directly in the airport. Renting a car is surprisingly cheap. Parking in the city is expensive, but being able to get around and se the beautiful mountains and fjords are well worth it. We went off season to see the northern lights (mid april). We saw them, and they were beautiful, but we wish we'd gone earlier (November-February).
If you are looking for Northern Lights, then I would recommend some other countries like Finland, as even from Tromso, many Northern light tour company drive to Finland to see the Northern lights (better to goto the Finland directly). We also saw northern light in Finland only (2hours drive from Tromso to Finland border) But Tromso is very beautiful of course, in winter it was covered with snow and amazing scenery. you can also drive to islands near by to the amazing snow covered mountains and take beautiful pictures.
A huge recommendation to visit Tromso. We mainly walked around the main street as it was raining a lot, we went to Polaria, and did some shopping. We took the cable car to the mountain and rented a car for two days. I would definitely recommend spending 2 days in Tromso as it is not a big city and spending 3 days driving around and exploring nature. We did not book any of the group tours or experiences as we were mostly interested in nature, and it was still a perfect trip. I would recommend spending at least 4-6 days. Weather changes a lot, and the longer you stay the bigger the chance you will have nice weather and also see the Northern Lights if traveling in winter.
Tromsø was a lovely town and we were fortunate enough to see the Northern Lights our first night while in town. it is hit or miss going anywhere to try and see the Northern Lights. The most surprising thing for our group of six was how amazing the food was in Tromsø. We highly recommend Full Steam Tromsø, Bardus, and Arctandria SjømatRestaurant. As well as many of the coffee houses and bakeries.
Nice town but despite a high solar activity , we could hardly see any northern lights staying in town due to poor weather conditions.(4 days of bad weather). The town and the houses have plenty of lights, which is cute, but not very favorable to look at the sky...
We loved staying at Marthas Apartments. The view was amazing! We even saw the Northern Lights from our living room window on the last night of our stay! The rooms were spacious and the furnishings, including the bed, were very comfortable! Best of all was the host family. Daughter Christine gave us a fine introduction to the area, with day trip suggestions. Host Are was especially helpful in getting us to our Northern Lights adventure on the night of a huge concert in Tromso! Martha provided a spacious living space! Fabulous.
Tromsø
Great location within walking distance to so many great bars and restaurants. There are two super markets close by if you prefer to cook. Its a little on the pricy side but that’s Norway for you. You can catch the 24 bus which stops one street over from the accommodation if you didn’t want to taxi or catch the express bus from the airport. Overall, it’s a great place if you want to move away from the hotel type of accommodation and have a little more flexibility in your stay.
The property was great, and the room we eventually got given (see below) was lovely with a nice half city/half street view and a really nice bathroom. Breakfast, as with most Scandic hotels I've used, was wonderful, great options of fresh bread, meats, fruits and drinks. Location is fantastic. I would also say my initial contact via Booking.com DMs, although it didn't end up going quite to plan, was very helpful with regards to things to do during our stay.
Great location within walking distance of many attractions. Very nice apartment style hotel with great view and nice amenities. Comfortable bed, laundry, full kitchen. Everything was clean and in good order. Blackout curtains in the bedroom helped to keep the room cool and dark enough to sleep during the midnight sun. A nice coffee shop is just around the corner, along with many restaurants and other attractions.
We stayed in the standard twin bedroom. We loved the design and the cosiness of the room and the common areas. The beds were comfortable, and the bathroom was squeaky clean. The hotel is conveniently located close to supermarkets, bars and bus stops, including the airport bus stop. We also loved the self-check-in (it was our first time in Norway so we didn't know that could be a thing).
Tromsø
Lovely hostel, super nice and friendly with prices that are incredible for the latitude. If you want a place which doesn't provide luxurious comfort, but a great environment, with good common spaces, nice workaway volunteers and anyway all you need in terms of accommodation, kitchen and services that's the best choice in north of Norway.
The location. Also, there is a girl who works for Magic Tromso and her based is in the reception of smarthotel. She helped us to book a last minute great tour, because we wanted to have a 2nd experience of the northern lights and at that moment there wasn't any available tour.
I really appreciated the kitchen facilities and 24 hour free coffee, tea and hot chocolate. I also liked being able to book a northern lights tour directly through the hotel. The tour was really enjoyable and the guide was excellent.
Tromsø
everything was perfect, very friendly and helpful staff, location was super in the downtown, the room was very cozy and had a good size in comparison to other hotel rooms in the same price range plus the perfect kitchenette.
The wonderful location to watch the Northern lights, or even just star gazing! Jonathan has been a very welcoming host, it was nice to meet him and chat with him. It’s also a good price-quality relationship for Norway.
Tromsø
- Good location for exploring Tromsø and the Tromsø area. Quiet at night. - Value for money (the apartment is relatively cheap compared to the bigger hotels in the city centre). - It was nice to be able to cook myself.
Very nice located. Took a room with sea and mountains view. Hotels is nicely refurbished. Inside very clean and modern. Breakfast was OK good with some good selection. Nice shower room.
