Our trip to Tromso lasted 4 days over the New Year period. The tours in Tromso are expensive, but so worth it as they give once in a life time experiences. We did a coach tour to see the Northern lights and the guide helped us with the right settings on our cameras and also had spare tripods for everyone to use. We also went on a whale safari which was amazing, the scenery of the Norwegian fjords was stunning and we were able to see numerous humpback whales and orcas in their natural habitat. We also went snowshoeing, again through some of the most stunning scenery I have ever seen. The only thing I hadn't accounted for was the lack of day light - the sun didn't rise completely but it was lighter between 10am and 2pm. The Norwegians were very friendly and everyone we spoke to spoke in perfect English. Definitely recommend Tromso for travellers who want to experience something different.
An absolute winter wonderland! Being as the hotel I stayed in does not provide any meals, I took my breakfast at the Egon Restaurant opposite. My hotel was situated in the centre of Tromso which meant the shops, bars and restaurants were of an easy walking distance. I spent the normal Christmas Day in England (Christmas Day In Norway is on the 24th), walking across one of the large arched bridges that Tromso is known for, plus that same evening I went on a boat trip around the port in search of the Northern Lights, but inept weather conditions meant they could not be visible, however I did get to see bits of it sitting on the plane at Tromso Airport on departure day. I particularly liked the Rorbua Pub which was annexed to the Radisson Blu Hotel and its cosy atmosphere from days gone by. I am thinking of going back in January 2017 as the only downside is that a lot of shops, bars and restaurants are closed for the Christmas period. One o'clock in the afternoon in Northern Norway is akin to eight o'clock in a British Summer Time, very dark and overcast, but to me it is absolute paradise..
A really wonderful dog sled trip with attentive and caring staff making it a memorable experience was had. We also stayed centrally in Tromso which was great. The northern lights trip was fun along with getting some glimpses of the lights and capturing on photos, the two staff were informative, and great fun. The town is easily accessed, even the trip we made across the bridge to the Artic Cathedral (on foot) Thank you Tromso. Some lovely memories.
Tromso is an amazing place to visit with lots of things to see and do. The people are very friendly and helpful. Highlight of our holiday was the amazing northern lights, which showed up on a least 3 nights of our stay. Transport is easy, and taxis too are affordable. Our favourite time was going out with Marianna on a fjord trip and northern lights. No need to eat out, food provided at hotel, which was a great bonus. In icy/snowy conditions use shoe grippers, then there is no problem walking around.
The whale watching trip was wonderful. The ship was not too large, the captain very knowledgeable and considerate of the whales. Saying that he did get us to within 100m of one whale breaching without disturbing it. Seeing these magnificent animals on TV is nothing like experiencing their calm majesty close up. Getting around is easy, most of the pavements are clear of snow and ice because they are heated underneath. Everyone we met was super friendly and most speak perfect English. We ate at a number of restaurants, all of which were very good but you should note that food is more expensive than many other European countries. The cable car up to the top of one mountain was being renovated so we did not get to go up. Next time!
They don't have enough information displayed about how things work: • no scaduale for ski slope; • bus tickets price was always a mystery (I never seen bus tickets with expiring time on it of few hours); To many beggars in city centre; Northern lights are not that impressive without proper high tech equipment. I am not going to recommend Tromso as a place where to go to ski. There is just a ski slope (Kroken), a bit far and with a minimum services (not even a coffee shop). On the other hand most of the people are friendly and helpful. I was impressed about whales safari, even though I only saw male humpback whales. The hotel was acceptable as a price and services.
