Very active friendly. 4km of beautiful walking trails along each side of the river (total of 8km). The 41km bike path Ecopista was stunning. Mountains are just a few km away with endless trails for biking and hiking.

A beautiful city with a really interesting central area.
A beautiful city with a really interesting central area. There is a waterpark outside the town and plenty of shopping at reasonable prices in the town. You can take a pedal boat on the river and the local government appear to be investing in the river aspect.
The cathedral is a must see and has recently been renovated. Nearby is the museum/art gallery.
There are some really lovely cafés and restaurants with terraces looking out on the river serving traditional pasteries and food.
I would definitely go back for a couple of nights again.

We chose this town for a one-night stay between a house rental in the Minho area and a flight out of Porto. It was a bit of a random choice based on my criteria of a cute and well-priced hotel under an hour from the airport, but the town also has some cool history so we gave it a go.
Upon arrival, we discovered that it was the first night of the town fair! I have been to several fairs in Spain but this was my first in Portugal. It was the same basic vibe - families delighted to see one another, tasty treats from food stands, brightly like rides blaring pop music over the sound of teens screaming. We grabbed ourselves a couple of petite pours of Super Bock and tried Portuguese-style hot dogs, which are packaged in jars or cans and come with lettuce and crispy fried onions; my Chicago-born partner even approved of how good they were! Amarante puts on a good fair, and it takes place along the river so we were able to explore the main streets of town in conjunction with the party.
The only bummer about the fair is that we couldn't get in to see inside of the church, which is of some importance having been built by a saint. I plan to spend more time in Portugal in the coming years, so maybe I will head back to Amarante for an afternoon to take in the monuments.

The staff were young, attentive, and at all times very engaging. Without doubt, they are a great credit to the reputation of the hostel. The interior design and layout of the hostel has been really well thought out and makes for a really relaxing stay. This hostel is absolutely first rate!

There always seems to be lots going on.
There always seems to be lots going on. The town tries to cater for a wide range of interests and the surrounding countryside offers good walks and bike rides. Restaurants are good and on the whole value for money. There is a Michelin star restaurant which we didn't try although it it was recommended.
Casa do Ribeirinho exceeded every expectation I had. The place was more beautiful than the pictures and the town of Amarante was so picturesque. Staff was most welcoming and friendly, checking up on us, giving a tour and dinner recommendations. I have told my entire family they must stay here and we will be back as soon as we can. A magical and special place, and the pool is GORGEOUS!
Location very good - just 15 minutes from Amarante. Breakfast was pre-supplied the day before, so you could use and then leave at your leisure the next day. Host very friendly. Very clean accommodation. Well done.

the design of the Hotel was really nice and the rooms where clean!
the breakfast with a view of the river was a highlight.
Lovely hotel, with nice gardens running down to the river. Perfect place to relax and enjoy Amarante (outside of fiesta time). Staff friendly and very helpful.
