The staff was wonderful. The restaurant was lovely, with very interesting menu choices, like partridge, and mushroom ice cream ( which was fabulous au natural, but didn’t like it when dressed with the sauces). Overall, the food was excellent, but also, a bit salty for me. The breakfast could have been better, some dark rolls, and eggs would be nice. The coffee machine coffee burned my stomach, but I didn’t realize it until the 4th day! I thought there was something wrong with me until I left and my stomach got better. Then I realized it was the coffee! Also, it was easy to drive to other great villages, like Monsanto and Sortelha.
We loved the town and the very friendly local people who genuinely pleased we had chosen to visit Belmonte We spent our evening drinking in a local family run bar trying local food specialities and drinks We had a wonderful time
We particularly enjoyed visiting the Jewish museum and Synagogue. We found the accommodation ideal as we were able to leave our dog there whilst we visited the museums. We enjoyed dinner in the local restaurant a few minutes away from the property.
A trail of history that must be appreciated by it's old architecture with traces of late Neolithic and Bronze age influence, to the charm and historic value, associated with Religious beliefs of Catholicism and Judaism living side by side, in peace and harmony, to some important Portuguese names like Pedro Alvarez Cabral, the discoverer of the route to Brazil by sea in 1500, and one of the most relevant voices of the April Revolution in 1974 o Dr. Jose Afonso (Zeca Afonso) the spent part of his life in this Vila. Belmonte is worth a visit to his Castle dated 1258, and likewise the four Museums that invite a a journey in the party of Portugal. The Discovery of the New World Museum, the Zezere Ecomuseum, the Olive Oil Museum and the Jewish Museum.
I was especially interested in the story of the Jews who had to hide their religion for hundreds of years, and were aided by their Christian neighbors. Aside from the well presented museum, it was lovely just walking around the town.
Belmonte has an interesting history as it was the birthplace of the navigator who discovered Brazil. It also has the last remaining Jewish community in Portugal. The castle is also a highlight and there are museums dedicated to exploration and to the Jewish history of Belmonte.
