Braganca has a proud and interesting history actively promoted by local businesses and officials. Unfortunately we arrived late on Saturday and left Monday so couldn’t explore the shopping scene. We didn't go into the castle but the walls and outside were very impressive, You can walk along the top of the walls with no restricgtion and a whole community is housed within them which is rare to see. The city is very clean and tidy, with lots of very nice places to eat. The castle is very well preserved, with a Military museum in one of the towers. One of the reasons we drove to Bragança was to see the Graça Morais art exhibition - she is one of Portugal's best contemporary artists, and she lives and works in Bragança - it was very good! Bragança is a cozy little historic town, the main feature being the castle on the hill. Recommend walking along the river to get there. A little bit of a climb to get to the castle but not too bad. Walk the castle walls and then wander the interior. Come back through the charming center of town. The beautiful ancient town of Braganca is a good choice for a short stay while being in Porto. The atmosphere of a place far from the beaten track makes it all worthwile. It offers a picturesque old town, numerous museums that one might visit for free, a park where one can stroll along the river and enjoy the views. Plus, there is a castle (Castelo de Bragança), which is a must-see on the list. Being there do not forget to drop in a Tourist Info where you'll find a superkind staff who will help you plan you trip in and around the place.
