In many respects Reno is a less outlandish version of its Nevada cousin Las Vegas. Within minutes of landing at Reno-Tahoe Airport you can be hearing the dinging of slot machines on Virginia Street where a glowing neon arch welcomes you to ‘The Biggest Little City in the World’.
Across the plaza is Harrah’s Reno, just one casino hotel available on Booking.com. Larger casinos with spas, such as Peppermill and Atlantis, are off the main strip. The largest is the Grand Sierra Resort with its own amusement park, large pool and night club. Pet-friendly motels and cheap hostels are other options.
Aside from gambling, the city hosts many events including the Reno River Festival in Wingfield Park. The Truckee River Walk connects shops, restaurants and bars popular with students at the nearby University of Nevada, the state’s oldest. The campus includes the Mackay Stadium and Fleischmann Science Center and Planetarium, set opposite the arboretum of Rancho San Rafael Park.
The Nevada Museum of Art is in Reno and neighbouring Sparks has a Heritage Museum. The 2 cities share a convention centre and livestock events centre, and there are many golf courses in their green surroundings. Even lusher are the Sierra Nevada mountains, whose peaks around Lake Tahoe offer some of the best US skiing.
The 3 casino property that make up The Row are undergoing a very large renovation. Many of the restaurants are closed and the casino seems to be downsized. The kids area is still there and very pleasant for families. If I were to do this again I would probably go elsewhere due to the renovations.
One night passing through. We went to walk around but the area was really bad. Very rundown. Dirty. Scary. My son was with me or I would not have left the hotel. We were nervous enough we came back and ate in the cafe.
I was too busy to stay long enough to explore the sights or surrounding area. There are many locations nearby that are fun and majestic. Virginia City is historic and a trip away. The "old 395", Carson City, and the Washoe Valley are all interesting. I could have stayed longer but this was mostly a trip from way out of Reno to get to the airport in time for a very early flight. By the way, the airport access was great! Freeway access was good.
This was a work trip to visit Reno museums. I thoroughly enjoyed the museums and the preliminary connections I was able to make. I wish I had more time to engage with the exhibits and take in the community gardens I came across. I look forward to my work taking me out there again. I would strongly recommend visiting the Holland Project gallery and the Nevada Museum of art. It's not an option under recommendations and this survey should include 'museums' as a reason to recommend Reno
It's not like it used to be. A lot of the hotel/casinos I used to visit have been torn down and replaced with businesses, or they're just empty lots. It's sad to see it reduced to this. On the weekends, it used to be so full of excitement and people. Not anymore. The homeless people stay outside the hotels begging for money and cigarettes.
Unfortunately, the availability of places along our trip from Vancouver to Southwestern Nevada had very few and far apart locations, especially in parts of Oregon and Nevada, so Reno is just an opportunity to grab a place for the night.
