This is a perfect location; easy to find, secure (gated) car park for guests and adjacent to a major club/entertainment venue for dining etc (without the noise!). Check-in was seamless and barely 20 seconds - unlike many high end hotels. They knew I was coming and after showing ID, I had the keys - all done!
Room was huge with the biggest daybed I've ever seen and a dual shower setup.
Featuring free WiFi and an outdoor swimming pool connected spa pool, both unheated, Mercure Charlestown offers conveniently located accommodations with free cable TV and free car parking.

I live in Sydney, just 160 km / 100 miles to the South, so not exactly a traveller. Newcastle is a nice place, less frantic than Sydney. It has great beaches, lots of places to dine out suiting all budgets, a very pleasant foreshore area.

Newie has come along in leaps and bounds since my childhood in the city. The downtown area has been completely rejuvenated and has a great, hipster vibe to it that was sorely lacking in the past.
The best beaches in Australia, the best rugby league and A-League team, and world-class wineries on your back step.

As we were stuck in Newcastle and in the hospital for the majority of the three weeks we were there, I couldn't get out quick enough....but in the time that I did have spare to look around, if you get away from the industrial areas, there are many areas around the beach in Newcastle that are beautiful. If you get out towards the Hunter Valley, Warner's Bay or Nelson Bay even better.

Newcastle is a busy port on one side and a beach holiday paradise on the other. There are several points of interest, such as the fort and the lighthouse. Good walking for the fit.
From the transport interchange, there is a useful, very regular, tram (bright red) out to points along the way to these sights. Tap on tap off with your credit card, if you don’t have the local Oyster Card. We found Rydges cafe and Queens Wharf good places to take refreshment whilst watching the ships passing to pick up coal. Newcastle is the largest coal exporting port in the world and watching them move with tugs in attendance is quite relaxing while you enjoy a drink.
The museum gives a good overview of Newcastle’s development, without being too exhaustive. Entrance is free. Give it a go, as it’s next to the Information Centre who are very helpful.
From Queens Wharf there is a short ferry across to Stockton, a small town with a good view of the harbour and shipping from its local park. Take your water and sun hat but toilets are a bit thin on the ground.
I would have liked more time to explore and take photographs. Enough said!

Newcastle was great for a visit and not just because family live there. Great vibe, many cafes and shops, really nice to stroll around the town and get a feel for the place. The river waterfront was really pleasant after a hot day.

Newcastle offers some great activities.
Newcastle offers some great activities. Great beaches, the recently renovated city baths, the Bogey Hole convict dug swimming pool on the cliff edge, Fort Scratchley, Nobbys
Head and lighthouse, Newcastle Memorial Walk, museums and galleries, fabulous cafes, National Parks and weekend markets. So much to do nearby.
Rooms look out onto a private verandah, perfect for catching a glimpse of the sunrise over the nearby reserve. It’s easy to walk from the light rail stop to the Grand. There are several eateries nearby as well. Hunter St Mall is a mess with construction, but not a sound can be heard at the hotel. A menu item that may not remain on the list, sadly, is the lightly pickled peach with farro & feta over a bed of baby arugula. And this is a safe & welcoming place for a single female traveler.
I had a fantastic experience at the Oriental Hotel and would definitely stay there again. The room was cozy and comfortable, with all the amenities I needed, and the location was great. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Newcastle.
The location of the property was perfect for our needs, we were seeing a show in Newcastle, and it meant we didn't have to drive back to Nelson Bay after the show. The unit was spacious with everything we needed for an overnight stay.
Clean, new, well appointed and comfortable unit. Showers are excellent which is rare. Managing agent staff (Ashleigh) was very helpful. Not centrally located in Newcastle but perfect for us. Price was awesome
The motel is in a good location for visiting Newcastle, it is only about 15 minutes drive. The room was quite small, although it was comfortable, and the breakfast was very good. Overall we enjoyed our stay.
As we were in Newcastle for an Airshow taking place over two days at the beach the location of the hotel was excellent, unfortunatly this was let down by the dirty dilapidated state of the accommodation.
Great central location in Newcastle with onsite parking at a small extra charge
We really enjoyed our stay apart of a driving holiday from Townsville to Canberra
Staff were really friendly and helpful
Great hotel right next to the Light Rail which services East Newcastle; with views of parks and river and in an Old Town area which is now tastefully renewed. Excellent restaurants and galleries.
Reasonably priced, communication with the facility was good, but I am not a fan of the contactless check-in process. Beds were OK. Room contained everything needed.
The chocolate provided on arrival to room was delicious. Think this and other gifts (preferably made in Newcastle area) make the hotel stand out from other hotels.
Very spacious unit with all needs for our short stay. Will come back on next visit. Very comfy bed and sofas, located very well to restaurants, cafes and hotels.
We didn't eat breakfast in the hotel, but it was very central with lots of options for breakfast very close by. It's a perfect location for east end Newcastle.
