Property info

Over hundreds of years Sandwich has evolved into the busy town it is today. The pretty listed buildings that line the streets have also been part of this change; with classic frontages hiding stunning interiors and yet still meeting the needs for modern living. Newgate House on New Street is a prime example of this with all the original features retained and yet the interior design giving the property a light modern touch. Newgate House started life as two properties, one a two storey and one a three storey house, in the early 19th century. When you enter from the street there is a kitchen/diner off the hallway. Revealed original wood stud work separates the cooking area from the breakfast bar and a door leads out to the patio garden where you can enjoy a leisurely glass of something in the afternoon sun. There is also a rear entrance for bikes and bins etc. The kitchen is fully equipped with induction hob, fridge freezer, dishwasher and microwave amongst other things. Also off the hall is the downstairs sitting room. 2 big comfy sofas, Sky TV and an open fire to snuggle down in front of during those winter evenings. Before going up the stairs you will notice a cleverly utilised study area behind, with antique writing desk and lighting. The perfect place to start that book you always wanted to write! Upstairs the master bedroom has a king sized 4 poster bed, built in cupboards and again some beautiful antique furniture. On this floor there is a second sitting room with TV, games cupboard. A cupboard on the landing houses the washing machine and there is a large bathroom with shower and separate roll top bath. Up the stairs to the second floor are the other two bedrooms one with a king size and one with a double bed. Newgate House is a property which has been renovated lovingly by the owners to be lived in and enjoyed. Please note when booking that the stairs here, like many other period properties in Sandwich are slightly narrower and steeper than normal.

Neighborhood info

Sandwich holds a wealth of cultural heritage being one of the Cinque Ports. The town is recognised as one of the best preserved medieval towns in the country and is now in ownership of its own Magna Carta. Sandwich is awash with things to see and do, much of it enjoyed on foot without needing to get back in the car. The ancient courtroom and museum can be located in the Guildhall. It really is a delight with timber-framed houses leaning over narrow streets. There are quaint cafes including an Italian pizzeria with wood fired oven, offering delectable bites breakfast until dinner. Follow the town trail taking in the historic sites, then relax on the quay with its cosy pubs and good eateries. Pop into the No Name Shop to devour a fresh pastry and there are even the remains of a Roman Fort that can be reached by river bus or head out to the estuary to spot seals. The quayside is charming with walking trails on the flat which run along on a relaxing 30 minute walk to the sand and shingle beach of Sandwich Bay or you can even walk through the footpath across Royal St George’s Golf Course, home to the Golf Open Championship to reach the beach! Inside the town you will also find no less than four historic churches. The bells you can hear quietly chiming from around the town. The narrow streets with timber framed listed buildings carry you back in time. You’ll also find a delicatessen, a grocers and many places to eat and drink. Events are held throughout the year. Sandwich is a bit of a secret getaway location to hide away from the busy world and enjoy local living. Just outside the town is the White Mill Rural Heritage centre and for those adventurous types, White Mill Wake and Aqua Park. Great fun for all ages and most abilities! Venture less than 2 miles and you can reach Deal a smugglers port town, here you will find another Championship golf course. And of course that bit further you have Canterbury or the ‘isle’ of Thanet with stunning beaches
