The property was immaculately clean. Easily the most pristine we have ever stayed at. Also appreciated the 11am checkout as a lot of places insist on earlier which makes the last day of the holiday very stressful. Helen, Peter and Bolt are...

Home from home. As a regular traveller it’s nice to have space where you can cook and relax on an evening rather than being sat on your bed. Apartments had everything you need for a short stay or a long one.

Property info

The Globe Hotel has played a central role in Cockermouth life for around 300 years now. It would have been a busy hostelry in its heyday, with stagecoaches stopping there, and passengers arriving from the station (then at Low Road). The 1861 Directory mentions a stagecoach delivering mail and picking up passengers for Keswick (2.15 p.m. each afternoon, plus 9.15 a.m. on a Saturday, returning the same day). The Globe also played host to Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde when he visited Cockermouth in 1871. John Dalton (1766–1844) was born in Eaglesfield, a few miles from Cockermouth. He was a regular at the Hotel. Dalton's most significant contribution to science is his atomic theory. He proposed that matter is composed of small, indivisible particles called atoms, each with a specific weight unique to each element. This theory laid the groundwork for modern chemistry and our understanding of chemical reactions. We have owned the hotel since 1993. Originally, it was a fully operational 30-bedroom establishment with over 20 staff members and a nightclub called The Outback. Unfortunately, we lost everything in the floods of 2009 and again in 2015. If you turn left from the hotel and head towards The Black Bull, you will see the markers indicating the water level and the extent of the devastation that struck the local community. Today, we offer five charming apartments, available in one or two-bedroom configurations. Each apartment features a living area with a flat-screen TV equipped with streaming services, and a fully equipped kitchenette with an oven, fridge, and microwave. Towels, linens, and a welcome hamper are provided upon arrival.

Neighborhood info

In addition to its historical significance, Cockermouth boasts a variety of shops, pubs, and restaurants, providing visitors with ample opportunities for shopping and dining. The town is also blessed with the picturesque meeting point of the River Derwent and the River Cocker, creating a beautiful landscape for leisurely walks and scenic views. For nature enthusiasts, the nearby Lake District Park is a must-visit destination. This park offers an immersive experience with a wide range of wildlife species and provides educational opportunities for all ages. Adults can indulge in a unique experience at the Lake Distillery, where they can witness the art of whiskey, gin, and other spirit production. The distillery offers guided tours, allowing visitors to learn about the crafting process and sample the finished product.
