Catania is a great place with lots to do. It's dirty, noisy and full of graffiti but we both felt perfectly safe walking around at night and in crowded areas.
It has a great WWII museum (bit of a walk from the town, but well worth it).
There's a train station for getting to Taormina (and other places) - trains are very good & cheap but you need to get there well ahead of time as there can be long queues to buy tickets.
It's great value in Catania - we found a place where a decent coffee was 70 cents. Most restaurants, even in the central areas, are very good value.
Interesting flea market just off the Duomo on a Sunday.

It is a place you must visit. It is full of attractions and attractive markets.
Minus is a dirty place full of trash on the floor.
It's not very safe either, as our car was broken into at night.

A very lively town full of historic buildings, churches, Baroque architecture, fabulous restaurants to suit every pocket - and exceptionally friendly people. The streets and public places, however, are dirty, rubbish-strewn and covered with graffiti and can be very off-putting. It is important to see beyond the mess! There are stylish boulevards, a lovely marina/promenade, and guided tours of impressive buildings - but the town really needs a good clean-up.

Catania is a UNESCO world heritage site, and we visited many historic sites, churches & museums. We took a day tour to Agrigento and Villa Romana del Casale. We did two roof walks, with great views of Mt Etna. Easy to get around the city on local buses. Great Indian restaurant near the B&B. I liked the fish market, my wife not so much. PS we're in our seventies.

Catania is a vibrant city with plenty to do and the locals are friendly. Good shopping and plenty of bars and restaurants.
The only downside is that there was a lot of dog mess on the pavements so you have to be careful when walking.

The city itself has a good atmosphere and is quite inexpensive with some good eating places. The bus service is extremely good with cheap local buses. Coaches to Syracuse and Taormina cost only 10 euros return and took approx 1 hour. Unfortunately it seems a very rundown area outside the city itself with derelict and abandoned buildings everywhere. Be aware of being ripped off by places and check your bill carefully. Taxis are horrendously expensive but if you are waiting at a bus stop cars will stop and offer to take you for half price fare.

The Liberty Hotel exceeded all our expectations. We had been greatly inconvenienced by the Catania Airport fire and considered cancelling. After much effort to get to Catania from Prague the reception we received from Silvio at The Liberty made it all worthwhile. The Hotel is absolutely beautiful, well located and the staff are exemplary!! Out stress quickly disappeared as we settled in to The Liberty. Silvio and staff.... thankyou very much!!
My wife and I had to stay in Sicily for an extra day because our flight got canceled. The airline didn't help us out with a hotel room, so we had to scramble and find a hotel close to the airport. We were pretty stressed and tired, but we lucked out when we found this gem of a hotel. Even though we rolled in super late, they treated us so well that we completely forgot about our flight hassles. I'd totally tell anyone to stay there!
Excellent luxury hotel in the heart of Catania, we were very comfortable here and very happy with the service. The breakfast was excellent, with variety to choose from and very fresh high quality food. We slept better here than any other accommodations we had in two weeks in Sicily. Excellent supplies in the room, very high quality.
The apartment is located in the heart of Catania, in the historical center, near Via Etnea. It is a typical Sicilian house, very spacious and clean. Our host was very helpful with everything we needed, including the transfer from and to the airport and responded very promptly. We really enjoyed our stay in Sicily!
