I was really looking forward to seeing the gothic glory of the Vienna City Hall. Unfortunately, half of the City Hall was under scaffolding. On top of that, there was a huge banner draped over the central tower due to some forthcoming celebration. In my opinion, this banner disfigured the City Hall. Between the scaffolding, the banner and the kiosks and other structures littering the approach to the City Hall, I could only see maybe 1/4 of the building. Very disappointing! I guess I'll have to go back to Vienna another time and hope that no special event is under way.
A great place in Vienna. If even you haven't visited a free guided tour of Rathaus on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, you can enter it any time during opening hours. There's free access in all the senses of the word. Last time we went there looking for the paternoster (an old lift dating back to 1920 moving constantly. We were surprised by the extent of openness of this public institution.
There are Christmas markets during the end of the year. You can drink warm alcoholic drinks all night long, ceremic cups are used where you pay a deposit. Reuse the cup and then at the end get your deposit paid back!
ours available but only on certain days. In winter there is an extensive outdoor skating area in the park in front of the Rathaus. if you can skate skates may be hired and a day ticket purchased. We enjoyed it.
Citys heart, main square during new years night. But still dissapointed for fireworks. If u want spectacular show of the fireworks during new year, Wiena is not the place. Its more calm , aristrocratic.
Go in the evening to get the flood-lit version of the building, but be careful, there's a moment they turn the lights off in all public buildings in order to be eco-conscious and avoid light contamination..
Not only is the there large noisy more commercialised Rathaus market, but all the older smaller markets as on the Freyung by the Schottenkirche, which includes the Charity and organic markets with alternative goodies to taste and buy.
There are a few Christmas markets in Vienna but the main one is behind the Rathaus which is one of the most stunningly beautiful buildings I've seen and made for a fabulous backdrop!
