The hotel is located on a place which has a great view, the staff is very friendly and supplied everything we need. There was a bathtub, sugar, coffee packets, and also there was a minibar for every room. The breakfast was excellent.

Fabulous trip to see Sigiriya - we booked our own tuk tuk. Be aware that you probably wont 'finish' at the same car park where you start - you are funnelled past the gift shops to a different car park so we had to find our way back to our driver. Also considering that most of the dogs we saw in SL were well fed by locals we saw too many v thin dogs here, which was horrid considering the cost of the ticket... Make sure you go early if possible- large crowds when we were coming out at 8:30am so would have made for a v v slow ascent. If you go early it is lovely and quiet.

Go as early as possible to avoid the crowds and heat. Bring water. Bypass the rock frescos at the top of the spiral staircases. There are guards there and they do not permit photos. You can take the walk way behind the spirals. If there are many people you will only get to see the frescos for about thirty seconds. It is better to view the copies and history at the museum.

wear good shoes to climb the rocky stairs and no need to carry too much water as on the halfway mark, you get drinking water - of course not bottled but potable. Start early in the morning (it opens at 6.30am) so that it is less crowded and less hot. Since at many places, it is a single file climbing up, you may have to wait for a long time if it is crowded. Avoid popular holiday times eg. April which is Sinhalese new year and weekends when even the locals visit it.

Breathtaking would be the word to describe the feeling when you reach the summit. The trek is arduous but take your time and it's well worth it. We went at 7.30 and it was empty but by 8.30 the crowds were arriving which would have made the climb harder especially on the metal staircase.

Be prepared to walk a long way and be fit enough to climb several hundred steps of varying construction. You can climb slowly if you arent very fit but there are a lot of steps to the top .. somewhere between 1300 and 1500 depending on who you ask.This is an amazing place so give yourself plenty of time to discover the grounds and the rock itself. Take a hat, wear sunscreen, take water and minimise whatever you are carrying... There are entrance fees for this site - not cheap but worth it. Many tourists and locals visit as its Sri Lankas premier attraction so a little patience on the climb, especially near the top, is wise. The views are spectacular and there are many vantage points along the length of the climb to the top. This is an extraordinary place to visit and well worth the effort to explore the large area of ruins.
