Look for our friend Rafael who does free and informative tours at the Cathedral, then visit his lovely shop “Casa De Artesanías” for real Mayan handcrafted goods. It’s located inside the tunnel beside the Cathedral. You will see a lot of ripoffs from China but this shop has excellent quality goods!
One of the most interesting Mexican Cathedrals I have ever visited. It lacks "over the top" decoration. The interior is subtle stone color, almost white. The walls have very little to detract from their purity. It's a marvel.
This old cathedral is beautiful inside and out. If you have time, sit through a mass service - the acoustics are incredible and the people are very humble.
