Do not pay the 6 euros to ride elevator up to the top. Walk up the hill and go around to the top. You don't really see much while in the elevator. The view is the best part. Pay the extra euro to climb the top platform
if you only want to go on elevator platform to see city view, take it on the street, ... it`s faster and cheaper. To elevator you have to wait a lot ( we waited 3 hours ), and you are up there in 30 seconds
Don't stand in line to pay 5.30 euro to go up unless you are set on taking an elevator ride - you can go up through the metro station and walk the street behind and pay 1.30 euro to walk over a bridge to the top of the elevator for the view.
Shh...there is a secret walk in through the upper level back way and pay the low fee to go up the observatory tower. The lines for the elevator tend to be long below and its expensive so take the lift from the upper platform near the Carmo ruins instead of from below. Fantastic views and you don't really need to take the elevator at all!
Make sure you take a trip up at night time too - the city skyline all lit up is a sight not to be missed and every evening there are musicians playing in the steps at the rear of the elevator - a great accompaniment to the adventure Lisbon (and neighbouring Sintra) has certainly gone a way towards healing me of my fear of heights that’s for sure
If you are fit enough you can go up to the Carmo Convent by feet without waiting long lines near the elevator. After that you can go down on the elevator and probably you gonna be alone! Watch you bag!!
