Beautiful small bungalow hotel right on the lake with a stunning jetty and nets over the water. Delicious food served all day and the best mescalita in Mexico. The hotel is about 10 minutes from the town - around £3 in a taxi and it’s so peaceful. At night you can only hear the sound of the water. The staff were so friendly and helpful - special thanks to Francisco for all the restaurant suggestions.

Absolutely lovely place with such kind and lovely owners. It was very homely and comfortable, while not feeling like we were in somebody else's space. We loved that there was a stove, oven, microwave, fridge and coffee machine in the communal area. It felt a bit like a hostel, except that the crowd was very mixed in age and also included families. We stayed in Mexico for four weeks and this was our favourite place.

All the bungalows are next to the laguna. You have large windows and mosquito nets. The bungalows are very clean and spacious. The small fridge was very much appreciated. You have canoes, SUPs, and live vests at your disposal. Parking is convenient.

Our stay at Bluebayou Bacalar was truly wonderful. The hotel is located directly on the lagoon, and the setting is absolutely stunning—peaceful, relaxing, and surrounded by natural beauty. The cabins are beautifully designed, very comfortable, and extremely clean. It’s clear that a lot of care and attention go into maintaining both the rooms and the entire property. Being right on the lagoon makes the experience special: you can relax in a hammock, sunbathe, or simply enjoy the view just a few steps from the water. The staff was incredibly kind, welcoming, and always helpful, which made our stay even more enjoyable. We genuinely felt well taken care of throughout our time there. We had a great experience and truly hope to return one day. Hopefully, in the future, there might also be a restaurant on site, which would make the stay even better. We really hope many people choose this hotel—Bluebayou Bacalar is absolutely worth it and highly recommended for anyone looking for a relaxing and beautiful stay in Bacalar.

The lagoon is exceptional, with stunning natural surroundings, beautiful light, and clean water. Bacalar is a town in transition - already a compelling mix of authenticity and contemporary comforts, with a few excellent restaurants, cafés, and bars, yet thankfully not fully overtaken by rapid gentrification. It feels like exactly the right moment to visit.

We believe Bacalar has been a bit overrated by visitors.

We believe Bacalar has been a bit overrated by visitors. It’s a nice local town, but tourist facilities are limited. Public access to the lagoon is restricted, and hotels, restaurants, and cafés are expensive considering the level of service provided. Cenotes and Los Rápidos are far from downtown, and some facilities are mandatory even if you don’t really need them, such as life jackets etc. Overall, Cancun and Tulum are much better equipped for tourists and offer better value for the money.

I remember like propably 10 years ago, people use to go to chetumal especially to have a lunch at calderitas but dont see calderitas the way it use to be. the government needs to promote more that area. Also the city center, there are some places that are vandalized by graffiti which gives it an odd. I cannot complain about the night life at the malecon, its really lively with many arts, concerts and food vendor. That gives it a plus. I like that now you have uber. It does help alot for me

Mahahual was rundown and uncared for.

Mahahual was rundown and uncared for. For a tourist destination we noticed a lot of uncollected rubbish on the beaches and the tourist spots needed a refresh. It is highly recommended for diving as they have a reef but again the seaweed is a major problem and has not been tackled by the local authorities bearing in mind that swimming is the main activity there.

Bacalar is a beautiful place to visit if you appreciate nature, peace and quite. The lagoon was my favorite place. You must try out the food at Mango and Chile, the best! I had my own rental car so getting around was pretty easy. Definitely recommend a boat tour.

The local Maya Museum has a very interesting cultural approach for those who have no prior knowledge about this people, but has a painstakingly small collection, I don t think there are more than 15 original items on display, though some of them quite wonderful. The archaeological sites nearby are very hard to access other than by rented car, which are pretty sparse, too. Some are even closed to the public, without bothering to state that online.

A quiet place with laid-back vibe.

A quiet place with laid-back vibe. Busy when cruise ships are in town, but they leave in the evening and the town is quiet at night. A good alternative to the crazy scene in Cancun, Cozumel or anywhere to the north. Snorkeling is not that good, but apparently the diving is good on the outer reef. The hotel's small freshwater pool was refreshing and the beach was cleaned and raked every day. Good birding too.
