Pretty city with lovely river walks and the old town was gorgeous. Beautiful churches and basilicas which were free to visit. The restaurants were excellent and a wide range of cuisines. It was a bit hectic driving around town and parking on the street was difficult. However, there were many inexpensive carparks available. This was our second time in Pontevedra and we were there to compete in multisport events which Pontevedra has become quite a hub for. The city centre has a unique old world charm and is full of quaint narrow streets and plazas with many small shops and bars/cafes. Lovely old Spanish town.
Lovely old Spanish town. Was there for the World Multisport Championships and was pleasantly surprised by how picturesque it was. Getting around is sometimes a challenge as Uber isn't really available. We were in Pontevedra to compete in a race. It is a beautiful city. Cycling has been developed and facilitated over the last few years. Our accommodation was fabulous. We did not speak the language, but people always stopped to assist with any query. It seemed a rather down-market town.
It seemed a rather down-market town. The San Francesco Church had a beautiful exterior, otherwise we didn't see much of interest. The Roman Bridge was a disappointment; over-restored and didn't look authentic, in fact rather modern! One of the main attractions is the Basilica de Santa Maria La Mayor. Unfortunately its richly sculpted portico is covered (being cleaned/restored at present) and the church closed. Pontevedra is a must on anyone's list visiting the north of Spain. I have fallen in love with the town and will definitely be back when I can. It is clean and has an old town charm about it and very easy to get around. Loads of history and also enough to keep you busy on an evening for a night filled with tapas and wine. They rushed through the preliminaries (passport etc) and shoed me to my room. The hot shower (shared bathroom) was a life saver. The room was minimalistic and clean. Comfortable enough, but who travels to stay in a room. Cafe's, restaurants, bank's, supermarkets and bars were in very close proximity. The Camino route was very close and easy to find. Julio is an amazing host who was so welcoming and his mum made THE BEST breakfast in the morning. She was so friendly and gave us a big hug good luck before leaving!
